Local PBS station is repeating a great six hour bio of Ernest Hemingway. I think it originally was broadcast about a year ago. I've never been a big Hemingway fan, but his life story is quite interesting from a sociological point of view. Not that I have such a view, mind you. I just thought it sounded appropriate.
Anyway, it's in three 2 hour parts. I *thought* I had already recorded it, but could only find the first two parts in the collection. On one 4 hour DVD. This time I'm using a six+ hour DVD to get all three parts on one disc.

Tonight the local PBS station is showing the movie "Giant", starring Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson, and James Dean in his last movie role. Three and a half hours, no commercials. Yeehah!
Haven't watched it before. It's an interesting view of Texas.

The Serpent Queen starting on Starz tonight. Always enjoy stuff about the Medici. Netflix had a miniseries—three seasons covering three generations (or two?). We enjoyed that a lot. I didn't know that much about it and to see the concentration of so many notable historical figures concentrated in one place in such a short span of time was fascinating: Donatello, Botticelli, Michelangelo, Leonardo, two future popes, Savonarola, Machiavelli (just a walk-on for him, but still...).

This evening PBS is showing the movie "A Mighty Wind", which is purportedly about how three "folk bands" get together to put on a concert to honor their deceased manager.
Here's the description:
A Mighty Wind 9/17, 8:00 PM 1 hr 32 min 2003, Comedy, Music Folk singers who were popular in the '60s, but have since moved on, attempt to put aside their personal differences for a special reunion concert that will be aired live on public television, but their personal neuroses threaten to ruin the evening.
Credits: Christopher Guest (Actor), Harry Shearer (Actor), Michael McKean (Actor), Fred Willard (Actor), John Michael Higgins (Actor), Eugene Levy (Actor)

Yes, the Netflix series was good. And the whole period is fascinating. If you like reading about this stuff, I'd check out Civilization of the Renaissance in Italy. It's what stoked my interest a long time ago (that and Machiavelli).

I recently viewed Waiting for Guttman. Christopher Guest is a master of his craft.

Tonight we're watching "East of Eden", based on the John Steinbeck novel, and starring James Dean. It's based on the book by the same name, by John Steinbeck.
The film is losely based on the 4th section of the book.

Recently watched Inherit the Wind on TCM, from 1960. That movie has more classic lines than the next two movies put together. One weird thing about the movie is that Spencer Tracy was nominated for Best Actor, but Fredric March wasn't.
Watch the movie. Tracy picks the low hanging fruit. He plays himself with better lines. But March is genius. He does all the heavy lifting. Anyway, a Must See American Movie. Could be in the Top Twenty.

Well, I cut the cable a couple years ago, but I'll look for Inherit The Wind on broadcast. The local PBS station runs a lot of classic films on Sat nights. This one would be perfect for them. And here's the Wiki on Inherit the Wind: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inherit_the_Wind_(1960_film)

Tonight I caught a bit of the first season of the British series "Ridley Road". It is about the rise of Fascism in the UK after WWII. Apparently this happened in 1950, and was quashed then, but it came back in the 1960's, which is when the TV series depicts events.
I had NO IDEA there was a British Fascist movement after WW2, let alone a resurgence thereof in the 1960's.
Here's an excerpt from above link:

Been watching a local rebroadcast on PBS of the 2019 BBC docudrama World on Fire. This is a story about life in Poland leading up to the German invasion, as well as episodes located in the UK, and France.
Most notably Helen Hunt has a part in it portraying an American radio journalist. First she's stationed in Warsaw, and then after the Germans invade, she's relocated to Berlin. She has an interestingly strained relationship with her German minder. As some of us may recall, Hunt sprang to fame in the USA as a lead character in the 1990's NBC sitcom Mad About You.
Currently I'm about 1/2 through the first season (which has seven episodes). There is *supposed* to be a second season, but it's looking like that either is delayed or dropped. IDK.
Wait... found the website for the second season, which states that filming has just resumed.

Saturday PBS broadcast "Citizen Kane", a classic film about a ... well, you could say a newspaper tycoon. But that would be a simplification of the character.
Based loosely on the real William Randolph Hearst, Citizen Kane documents his rise and fall until his lonely death.
I wonder if Trump was inspired by Citizen Kane.
Here's the Wiki on the movie, Citizen Kane:
