So will the mask mandate be permanent? I will only accept a mandate if it is temporary. Was driving 55 on the freeway permanent? Was not taking any liquids on an airplane permanent?

Ebola has not been eradicated, but the incidences are so low, it effectively doesn't exist in this country. Same can be said for many major diseases.
Unfortunately, that is the best we will get until a true vaccine is developed, and even then, there will be idiots who refuse to take it.

It is not a given that we will EVER be able to beat Covid with just a vaccine. The virus may simply mutate too much and too often for a vaccine to be effective.
Now, this is not yet known; but it's my guess that continuing the adoption of masks, social distancing, and even lockdowns will be vital in preserving the human race against covid. If it takes a national emergency declaration/order to do that, so be it. I'd rather live, wouldn't you?

The federal government simply does not have the authority to mandate masks anywhere except perhaps on federal land. The feds can't even force me to wear clothes. These are State issues. I think we should wear masks while the virus is still raging, but the way to do it is for the Feds to preach it and practice it while the States decide how/if/when to enforce it. It would take a Constitutional Amendment to give congress or the president that authority. I understand that, but with government guidance, I am hopeful that the states will act in unison on this.
