But we got lucky.
If he had not destroyed himself by being such a complete idiot, had he actually been someone who understood the system, our country could have gone down a path of fascism that would likely have harmed us permanently. Never have we come so close to being destroyed.
So what I expect to happen now, is indictments of him and all his cronies. The next person who tries to run on a nationalistic fascist platform needs to know that they will not have such an easy time abusing the office, that legal mechanisms are in place to hold them accountable. I want to see mechanisms implemented that prevent the justice department from being used as a legal shield for the president. The AG works for the people, not the president.
And next, I want to see national mandates for COVID response. If that means everyone wears a mask, then so be it. If we all follow best practices, we can have this beat in a few months. We could have been the model for the world, and instead, we became the worst case scenario. Embarrassing. Easy to fix.
I also want to see an infrastructure bill as soon as possible. Let's get US people working on US problems.

The federal government simply does not have the authority to mandate masks anywhere except perhaps on federal land. The feds can't even force me to wear clothes. These are State issues. I think we should wear masks while the virus is still raging, but the way to do it is for the Feds to preach it and practice it while the States decide how/if/when to enforce it. It would take a Constitutional Amendment to give congress or the president that authority. |

Freon, fascists don’t lower taxes, cut corporate taxes almost in half, support the second amendment, and drastically cut regulations. Those are the exact opposite of what a fascist does.

Would you find that more acceptable? Fascists, Nazis, Maoists, Stalinists, etc...they all use extremely similar tactics and policies to achieve their political goals. Authoritarianism, mass violations of civil rights, distractions and promises of good things to the common person all for what is claimed to be for the common good of society. The differences in these philosophies are what the authoritarians want to accomplish through those policies. You seem to be cool with the authoritarianism, mass violations of civil rights, bread and circuses. You seem more than ok with it, you seem to accept it as the only viable means to achieve your goals. Your problem isn't that Trump was doing those things to some extent, it was that he wasn't doing it for a goal that you approved of. The problem is that you want to use even more of those tactics and policies. You are willing to take those policies to the extreme. Way more than Trump is/was willing to do. |

So will the mask mandate be permanent? I will only accept a mandate if it is temporary. Was driving 55 on the freeway permanent? Was not taking any liquids on an airplane permanent?
