So a couple days ago the idiotic governor of CA and likely eventual presidential candidate in 4 or 8 years imposed another draconian requirement. Almost everyone has to wear masks in public. Sounds reasonable for a highly contagious disease that is wiping out civilization...oh wait that's not what's happening. It's a disease that is basically harmless for the majority of people it infects. It is an unreasonable infringement on rights through emergency order. No debate, no talking it over, no discussion. King Newsom has spoken. Not only that it once again displays amazing shortsightedness and inability to recognize the potential consequences of enforcement. In a time when the relationship between local police and citizens is probably at it's worst point in decades do you really want to dump more on the police and grant them even more power to harass people over not wearing a mask? All this talk about defunding or reforming the police and you want to give them even more power? Holy shit. The good thing is that several sheriffs and city departments are publicly refusing to enforce the order and I suspect many are quietly doing the same or at least putting it down so low on the list of priorities that jaywalking is deemed more important. " Newsom hopes a ‘bit of persuasion’ will convince Californians to follow mask order"By PHIL WILLON STAFF WRITER JUNE 19, 20203:44 PM SACRAMENTO — Gov. Gavin Newsom on Friday urged Californians to heed his new order requiring most residents to wear face coverings in public to help stem the spread of the coronavirus and said violators could face enforcement action...." www.latimes.com/california/story/2020-06-19/gavin-newsom-mask-order-coronavirus-enforcement

California is one of a handful of states that have seen a recent surge in covid19 cases.
Orange County recently rescinded its mandatory face covering order.
Newsom is doing the prudent thing by overriding that rescinding with a state order.
Hey, I don't like it either. But I'd rather defeat this pandemic than whine about minor inconveniences.

An unenforceable mandate is hardly going to "defeat the pandemic". This is an attempt at creating fear and so far it doesn't seem to be working. I went to the store without a mask a little earlier today. Nobody gave a shit.

Mandates create resistance, which can be worse for compliance.
Just make PSA's supporting their use.

I have worn a mask exactly once since this began. Because I needed dog food and was in a hurry and Petco is dumb. I've moved my business to Petsmart.
You want to know why I honestly am not wearing it?
It feels stupid. I feel stupid. You can share your "pissing on each other's legs" memes all you want. You look stupid in your masks.
I'm not talking fashion wise. But it almost seems like you're wearing a sign saying "I'm a programmed good little NPC." It makes my skin almost literally crawl to willingly wear that sign.
When I got the alert on my local news app that Newsom had implemented that order, I was already debating how much I was willing to pay in fines before I gave in.

What you folks may not realize - or perhaps you do - is that the face masks do NOT protect YOU against CV19. Nope, the virus can get right through mos of them, unless they are N95.
Nope, the masks are there for the protection of OTHERS. They prevent virus-laden droplets from exiting your maws and into the lungs of others.
What does it mean if you refuse to wear a mask? Well, for starters, that you don't give a SHIT about others. And as the virus spreads from careless and inconsiderate folks like you, eventually it will come back around and bite YOU.
Of course I'm not surprised that so many cons here are anti-mask. It just proves that they do NOT care about others. And they call themselves patriots.
More, like, they are FAKE patriots, only out for themselves, and screw everybody else.
Now, it's been commonplace for people in various Asian nations to wear face masks when they are sick with a respiratory bug. Not to protect themselves, but to protect OTHERS. It's part of their culture to CARE about others. We could do well to learn from China, Japan, etc. about such matters. In this case, our vaunted individualism amounts to voluntary manslaughter.
Think about that the next time you refuse to wear a face mask in public, confined places. It makes YOU look like a stupid, uncaring, selfish turd.

The fear mongering isn't working. I didn't support crashing the economy. Putting millions into poverty. Making millions of people more susceptible to much more dangerous diseases. That would be you and others who support this kind of horseshit.

It's basic public health pandemic prevention. It has NOTHING to do with ideology or politics.
Enjoy your virus.

I may be a lemming, an NPC in the heart of Trump country. Been wearing a mask since the beginning (when at work or enclosed public spaces). It was interesting to see the mask adoption by most, followed almost immediately by a quick decline as Trump went all "liberate". Now, here in a rural county that's had 51 infections and 0 deaths, the consensus is it's done. A county of 30 000+, less than 100 have been infected so far, and the folks are done with it. Maybe 1 in 8 wears a mask in public spaces.
I'll revisit this post in a few months to see how this bit of rural mid-America is adapting.

Cops are terrible and racist and need to be defunded. They resort to violence way too quickly in confrontations.
Also, elected executive officials can just make any decree including locking people in their homes for months and you better listen or those cops I mentioned earlier will confront you.
And also, BLM protests are ok because racism is bad.

Yes. Yes, I guess I am. Y'see, I'm fully aware the mask is to protect *other* people Odiferous.
But the other people I'm expected to protect are morbidly obese middle aged women who need scooters to ride in Walmart ... and won't wear a mask.
I'm being asked to protect elderly people who walk up to bank tellers, step around the plastic glass shields put up "for protection" and pull their masks down to talk to the attendant.
I think elderly people and morbidly obese middle aged women should stay their asses home if they don't want to get covid 19. One of the biggest ways Democrat governors and the media have fucked us on this pandemic is by maintaining this facade and illusion that society has been bubble wrapped for their safety and protection. The best side effect of not wearing a mask is ... it keeps the repellent members of our society who think they're important away from me. I don't have to have anything to do with a "true believer" because they're avoiding me .. wait for it ... like the plague.
If we all would refuse to be Chinese peasantry and wear masks, perhaps the people in danger of complications from this virus would stop thinking the sharp edges of society have been sandpapered smooth for their protection. Join me Odiferous. Join me in fixing America.

Here in my neck of the woods in California, very few people are wearing a mask. Primarily young kids who think cosplaying is cool. Like where I work (with primarily elderly people) there's the one 30 year old, white Bernie Bro who wears a mask when he leaves work to get in his car. I have a good chuckle at his expense when I see him walking out the door with his trendy virtue signaling mask on. Cool design tho, bro.
In direct contrast to the "idiots in Sacramento's" decree, the city facebook group I joined when I moved here has members that regularly give people warnings about which local businesses to avoid that are now mandating mask wearing. (Can't help but notice it's always the big national corporations that colluded with state governments on the shutdowns.)
BTW ... I never saw any "mask adoption by most." I saw a shitload of virtue signallers on facebook sharing pompous memes about mask wearing. But I never saw people wearing masks "until Trump went all liberate." Trump was very much a follower on this, as he is on most things.
But you can go back over my posts in the past 3 months to see me expressing my frustration about the people who are in danger of this virus not taking it seriously.
I think you're exhibiting some echo chamber symptoms

My first response in this thread was that masks should be voluntary (supported by PSAs) and not mandatory. Meh, perhaps I'm a virtue signaling SJW who's being played by media and my internal bias but I'm just wearing a mask to slow the local spread of a contagious virus. Truth.

I'm not suggesting you're a virtue signalling SJW. I'm pointing out most of the people getting visibly outraged over this mask issue *are* virtue signalling SJWs. It's not Trump pushing people to not wear masks. It's people sharing their "3 reasons I wear a mask! I'm KIND, I'm COMPASSIONATE, I'm HUMBLE!" memes.

It is fear mongering. This "Pandemic" is a joke. Unless you are elderly with multiple serious medical conditions there is practically no risk. It has everything to do with control and politicians overreacting in order to cover their own asses.

Coming from rural Trump country myself, that has been my experience as well. And, most of the people around here that that I have heard being vocal about refusing to mask have made some comment about the mask not protecting the wearer, making the wearer an idiot/sheep/fool, etc. In other words, they are displaying their ignorance. They make as much sense as one who mocks the parent of a toddler for installing a childproof gate at the top of the stairs. "It won't prevent you from falling down the stairs, IDIOT! It's too short! HAHAHAHA! You're just a sheep! Nobody's gonna tell ME to install a gate on my stairs!" Whatever. I wear the mask when I go shopping to help me not spread it if I'm a carrier. But I agree with you, a PSA is much, much preferable to a law. Honestly, I think, and have thought from the beginning, that the refusal to wear a mask is rooted more in the fear of standing out in a crowd that anything else. Everything I've seen and read since then has reinforced than initial assessment. At least Queshank is honest about the fact that how people look (and how he would look) in the mask has affected his decision.

Except here's the flaw in your analogy. (Even tho I'm sure you already know how bad analogies are at convincing anyone of anything but rather just get people to focus on the differences rather than the similarities.)
Children do fall down stairs and hurt themselves. They don't contract the Wuhan Flu and die.
I want you to understand exactly why I'm being honest. I don't mind standing out in a crowd. I've even shared on the boards stories about how I deliberately go out of my way to stand out in a crowd. Put a Dole banana sticker on your cheek and walk around with it all day once. Watch how many people come close to physically assaulting you to try to remove it.
Not wearing a mask is as much standing out in a crowd as wearing one.
Wearing a mask tells me you're anti science. Not the science behind mask wearing making it so people who won't cover their mouths when they cough safer. The science behind this entire pandemic. It tells me you pay more attention to journalists and politicians than you do scientists. While you trumpet your faith in dogma.
