I am willing to give Trump a lot of leeway, considering the office he occupies.
But this? This should be bringing conservatives over to the side of the protestors.
All to please a political base, in an election year.
Mental exercise: What if POTUS (D) was doing this in States (R)?
The rightful howls of protest would blanket this board. Instead, we've calls for the blood of the protestors. :/

Mental exercise: What if POTUS (D) was doing this in States (R)? The rightful howls of protest would blanket this board. Exactly. DHS was given these broad powers long before Trump, and at the time, people on the left and right raised concerns about this stuff. Now we're seeing those concerns come into full fruition. But don't dare suggest disbanding DHS, sending its constituent parts back to their original cabinet level agencies, and putting restrictions on these broad powers.

The fact that gangs and looters and rioters and killers are occupying dem run cities must be a horrible source of embarrassment.
If they ever stepped foot in places that do not tolerate this crap I’d support trump from stopping the mayhem.
They are like a bunch of petulant spoiled brats

Honestly, I want to be mad and fired up about this.
But the news reports out of this area are so sketchy, biased and unreliable that I just can't.
I read these opinion pieces one way or the other and they all seem like useful propaganda tools. Because they are *all* opinion pieces.

What's not opinion is the authority being used by DHS in these situations. It's very, very broad, and thus, prone to abuse. And left and right civil libertarians have been screaming about it for years.

He showed great restraint and composure. Between this and the gassing of the Mom's, it definitely looks like they are trying to provoke a violent response. Who cares if a few people have die? The base will eat it up.

And I've seen as many videos about people breaking windows and stealing from shops in Portland as I have videos of moms linking arms and standing in protest. Most left and right civil libertarians would also be making an argument in defense of these business owners and homeowners' private property rights as well. And there's a Constitutional argument to be made for defending private property rights. If the local governments won't ... does the federal government have a responsibility to? Queshank

Is there a level of violence which would justify using federal authorities (think LA riots)? If so, then there are proper ways to do that, such as invoking the Insurrection Act. Also, the feds - in this instance - aren't really claiming a responsibility to protect private property rights. And some of the arrests they're making also don't seem to be related to that either. Also is Portland (or Oregon) really not making an effort to prosecute vandalism, etc. (serious question, I haven't been following what going on in Portland that closely; seems like the protests, etc. were pretty manageable until recently).

I want the government to provide for the common defense, but that doesn't imply support for coups or a DMZ on the border.
Similarly, we can support government protections of private property without supporting these kinds of heavy-handed tactics, ie the beating peaceful people, gassing mothers, plucking people off the streets in unmarked cars, etc.
Anyone could rent a car, throw on some camo and a vest with "POLICE" on it and then start pulling people off the street. They would be indistinguishable from DHS agents. That's where we are now.

Like I said at the outset... I have no idea. None of us have any idea what's going on in Portland. Any more than we did what was going on in the "autonomous zone" in Seattle. Queshank
