So, there's been some talk about Ukraine developing its own nuclear weapons, and Ukraine has said they are not attempting to acquire them:
As that last link makes clear, this all goes back to the Budapest Memorandum.
Then over the weekend, Rep. McCaul was apparently mixing Ambien and booze again. He was at an Atlantic Council event and suggested that Ukraine gave up its nuclear weapons in exchange for military protection, claiming the US and Nato betrayed Ukraine. (Source at 17:03 mark)
That is not what the memorandum did.
Ironically, it was John Measheimer who argued that Ukraine should keep those nuclear weapons.
The irony of Ukraine threatening to get nukes being what started the ramped up hostilities shouldn't go unnoticed.
