I work on the IT side of medical research, and we are currently in discussions of how we can make ourselves more racially aware and considerate.
One simple example is when referring to drives in a computer, they are listed as a master drive and a slave drive. Or we will often slave an array to a different controller. It's used fairly often to refer to dependent systems (which may be the word we turn to).
It never even occurred to me that this would be an issue, but turns out, really offends the black members of the team. No biggie to change it, but it got me thinking there are likely other examples in other disciplines.
What examples are you aware of?
Thanks,
Freon

I don't like it that we refer to a female's reproductive process as her "minstrel cycle".

This really is a perfect example of the type of systemic racism that people are marching in the streets about. In so many ways this encapsulates the "problem" perfectly.

I also don't think that afternoon snoozes should be called "naps", or that when one becomes drowsy in the daytime that they should be asked if they feel "nappy".
It's just another way to imply that all black folk are lazy, good for nothing day sleepers who would rather lie about than work.
I prefer the word "siesta", because it doesn't offend anyone who speaks American.

I don't like it that we refer to a female's reproductive process as her "minstrel cycle". I find it's best not to refer to them at all, at least not to the female in question! As for the actual OP, I don't think there's much benefit to making such a list, as that has a tendency to turn into a bunch of white folk looking for reasons to express outrage on behalf of those who might not even care about the issue at hand. Take it on a case by case basis. If someone has a complaint about jargon and it seems legitimate, deal with it. Otherwise, get the job done and don't go looking to fight battles on behalf of people that never asked for your help in the first place.

It's obviously a problem, or so many wouldn't be marching in the streets right now.
I realize that the remarks, so far, have been a complaint about political correctness, but there is a difference between racism and PC. To see racism as PC, nullifies what racism is. Maybe that is their goal.
I have personally heard several people, all from the south, completely innocently say that someone 'Jewed' them down, meaning cheated them on something. I immediately called them on it, because that kinda sucks to me. Was I being too PC? I was offended. And why shouldn't I be. Freon

I joke, but I do get it. Here's my question: If not "master and slave", which is obviously offensive to some, what other terms might we use with the guarantee that no one would be offended? "First and second" might offend those who don't like the idea of winners and losers, or who don't like the idea of distinction by class. "Primary and secondary" might offend trumP voters and others who are educationally challenged. And "MR. and MRS."? Not even going there. So what would you suggest? "Top and bottom"?

Well, dependent and independent would work, but such long words, and IT people tend to economize their words.
Primary and subordinate? I could go with that.
It is not enough that we change the words. We need to change them in an industry standard fashion for two reasons. One, we want the solution to be systemic, and two, we all need to understand the meaning across the entire industry, not just our little neck of the woods. Freon

Again, I get it. I'd be tempted to suggest calling them the "A and B" drives, if it were not for fear of igniting old Ana/Baptist embers.

"Jewed" is a bigoted term used specially to belittle people. That's not even remotely like "master/slave drive" in any sense whatsoever. When dealing with jargon that might be unintentionally offensive, I don't think minorities need white folk to come running to their rescue unbidden. I sure wouldn't want someone doing that for me, assuming I was upset or offended and needed them to protect me.

You would think that Jewed was used in that way, but in all the cases I've encountered (3), those people were not even remotely bigoted. Where they live, it's just a word.
They had no idea they were saying anything offensive. When they learned, they stopped. It wasn't a big deal. Freon

"Jewed" was coined as a bigoted word and you know it. It's not the same. I'm not saying that the complaint wasn't valid. I'm saying that waiting for the complaint, or asking about it if you have a question, is how you treat adults. I'm sorry, but your OP requesting a list of potentially offensive words to minorities comes across as horribly paternalistic and potentially much more offensive and irksome than which you are trying to prevent.

Actually, I was not looking for a list of words. I just gave the example because I am currently dealing with it directly.
I was looking for parts of our justice system. Our banking system. Standardized testing (schools, DMV, etc).
Systemic racism is just that, systemic.

its odd...its estimated there are 40 million slaves around the world today...many, estimated 25% are children...the word has its origins when eatern europeans, slavs, were forced into bondage by the muslims....
why is it that black people seem to "own" the term slave...its perhaps most prominent today in africa, black on black...but also widely practiced today in many countries...human trafficking that is prominent in eastern europe and central america and mexico is considered slavery...
personally, I'm opposed to the use of "male" and "female" when describing electrical parts, or plumbing parts...I think we need to come up with a whole new terminology...
I'm also against all stereotypes...they are all simply made up notions, pulled out of thin air, with no basis, at all...there must be someone who sits in a room, and he makes up stereotypes...if you happen to be part of a group that has a positive stereotype - say asians or indians being good at math, you are simply lucky...but sometimes there are negative stereotypes, like the heineken ad poking fun at germans for being serious and not funny....that are completely made up, and offensive....
yes, we have a lot of work to do...
I'm very confident when we tackle this problem, the looting and rioting and killing will stop...I know these actions have nothing to do with the made up stereotypes...

Blacks don't really care about this stuff. They just love to watch white people jump through imaginary hoops they set up for them to jump through. And white anti-racists are control freaks too who like to make up arbitrary rules and watch their slaves crawl and whine and try to obey arbitrary master. Tell you what. Once blacks start obeying the law, I'll start worrying about obeying all their little rules about what "offends" them. Let's start with first things first. The shit stains burn our cities down and then tell us we need to follow their rules. Fuck them. Thank you for responding.
You have a right to disagree, and if we are going to change things, it's those like you who will be the toughest to convert.
Although your entire argument seems to just be an opinion. How can you possibly know what Blacks really care about. Do you listen to them?

I would suggest looking up sarcasm in the dictionary, because you don't seem to understand the way it works.
What is going on with BLM is not about slavery around the world. That is a straw man argument. You are trying to distract. BLM is about slavery in the US, and how since it ended, PERSECUTION of blacks not only is still occurring, but is baked into our very society in overt and subtle ways. This thread is about recognizing that persecution. If you knew that tapping a pencil on a table caused the person next to you to have a headache, would you still do it? What if you disrespected that person? That is ultimately the question we are asking. Is not a disrespect of black people a form of persecution?
