I've finally caught up on the "Lone Wolf and Cub" series of six films from Japan. Super good and super bloody. TCM has been running them. Greg says "Check'em out".

Greg 4 buck each on Amazon. It's about time for me to check out TCM. Don't watch First Cow. We watched it tonight on Not My Choice Night and although there are some good cow movies out there, 1st Cow is not one.

Started re-watching "World At War" on DVD the other week.
I'm up to the surrender of Berlin.
But the series does jump around in time. I expect it will be discussing the war with Japan soon enough.

I always liked that series. I remember one segment where actor Jimmy Stewart was interviewed about German fighter pilots. Stewart was a no shit combat bomber pilot and squadron commander in WWII. Yes, the series has a lot of memorable scenes, moments, interviews. I liked Stewart's comments. But also there was a Japanese soldier who was interviewed - I think in the episode about Burma. He made some very pithy observations, such as, "The jungle held no fear for us, but it seemed to hold a lot of fear for the British and Americans". And, "In the jungle, there is plenty to eat. You watch what the monkey eats. What a monkey eats, you can eat".
I took a break from it the other day, to watch some recorded documentaries - one on Hawaii, and others. And now I have to go ferret out another mysterious movie for the boys over in the Breeze to puzzle over.

Greg I started it but my internet must be running too slow for Japanese. I can watch other shows but Lone Wolf plays for a minute and buffers for 3.

Just got through re-watching Ken Burns' epic 17 part documentary on the Civil War.
Whew.
Also reading a really big thick and fine print biography of US Grant. Didn't know he was a superb horseman.

Local movie channel is having a Cary Grant and/or Kathryn Hepburn marathon:
Mr. Lucky (Grant)
Holiday (Hepburn/Grant)
Bringing Up Baby (Hepburn/Grant)
His Girl Friday (Grant)
Adam's Rib (Hepburn)
And these are followed by three "Thin Man" movies...

Another gem on PBS is American Experience.
Today they showed a new (to me, at least) episode, called "The Code Breaker". It's about Elizabeth Friedman who broke secret codes in WWI and WWII, as well as secret codes used by the Mafia in their operations. I missed most of the first showings today, but I see that it will be rebroadcast locally later this week and weekend.
Here's a listing:
Since I was not familiar with her name, I sort of ignored it, but I'm setting my DVR to catch the next showing.
Interesting tales of how J. Edgar Hoover managed to fuck it all up, trying to claim the spotlight for himself.
Sound familiar?

Watching a PBS/BBC Great Estates hour on Roslyn Chapel in Scotland.
Apparently it got a big boost from the book, "The Davinci Code". Never read it myself, but it's nice that the olde lady got a new lease on life from all the fanfare.
Of course it's all fanciful bunk.

Burns' series on the War Between the States (not a Civil War) was OK, not great. Shelby Foote saved it and was the highlight of the series, but honest folks like him would be forbidden by the purge-happy leftists of today. Burns has already been criticized for actually including a Southerner *GASP* in his project.
If you want to read the real history, skip that brown nosing faux hero worship book about Grant and read Foote's trilogy of books about the war.
