Been watching a re-run of "Guilt on Masterpiece".
It's a Scottish production that deals with how two brothers get deeper and deeper emeshed in trying to cover up the result of a fatal drunk driving accident.
First broadcast in GB back in 2019, and then in the USA last fall (I think!). It started being rebroadcast here at the start of May. I missed Episode One of Guilt, but there's enough flashbacks and on-line summary to make watching Episode Two and the rest worthwhile.
Lesson: be careful when you try to cover up your mistake(s).

Tuesday, May 24 9:00 pm KQED 9 American Experience Plague at the Golden Gate 1 hour 56 min Over 100 years before the COVID-19 pandemic set off a nationwide wave of fear and anti-Asian sentiment, an outbreak of bubonic plague in San Francisco's Chinatown unleashed a similar crisis. The death of a Chinese immigrant in 1900 would have likely gone unnoticed if a medical officer hadn't discovered a swollen black lymph node on his groin - evidence of bubonic plague. Fearing the city would become the American epicenter of the disease, health officials drew on racist pseudoscience to cover up the threat and protect San Francisco's burgeoning economy. As the outbreak continued to spread, public health officer Rupert Blue became determined to save his city. He established ties to Chinatown and ultimately proved that throngs of flea-infested rats-rather than the "foreign" habits of the Chinese-were the real reason the disease persisted. Based on David K. Randall's "Black Death at the Golden Gate: The Race to Save America from the Bubonic Plague" and directed by Li-Shin Yu.

Tonight the local PBS station ran a classic film, "Citizen Kane". I've seen it before, but this time I got a lot more out of it than in past viewings.
It is based on the life of William Randolph Hearst, although for obvious reasons his name, and other identifying characteristics, are never mentioned.
Orson Welles plays Charles Foster Kane. Joseph Cotton plays his best friend, Jedediah Leland.
"American drama film produced by, directed by, and starring Orson Welles. He also co-wrote the screenplay with Herman J. Mankiewicz. The picture was Welles' first feature film. Citizen Kane is frequently cited as the greatest film ever made.[5] For 50 consecutive years, it stood at number 1 in the British Film Institute's Sight & Sound decennial poll of critics, and it topped the American Film Institute's 100 Years ... 100 Movies list in 1998, as well as its 2007 update. The film was nominated for Academy Awards in nine categories and it won for Best Writing (Original Screenplay) by Mankiewicz and Welles. Citizen Kane is praised for Gregg Toland's cinematography, Robert Wise's editing, Bernard Herrmann's music, and its narrative structure, all of which have been considered innovative and precedent-setting.
"The quasi-biographical film examines the life and legacy of Charles Foster Kane, played by Welles, a composite character based on American media barons William Randolph Hearst and Joseph Pulitzer, Chicago tycoons Samuel Insull and Harold McCormick, as well as aspects of the screenwriters' own lives. Upon its release, Hearst prohibited the film from being mentioned in his newspapers.[6]
"After the Broadway success of Welles's Mercury Theatre and the controversial 1938 radio broadcast "The War of the Worlds" on The Mercury Theatre on the Air, Welles was courted by Hollywood. He signed a contract with RKO Pictures in 1939. Although it was unusual for an untried director, he was given freedom to develop his own story, to use his own cast and crew, and to have final cut privilege. Following two abortive attempts to get a project off the ground, he wrote the screenplay for Citizen Kane, collaborating with Herman J. Mankiewicz. Principal photography took place in 1940, the same year its innovative trailer was shown, and the film was released in 1941.
"Although it was a critical success, Citizen Kane failed to recoup its costs at the box office. The film faded from view after its release, but it returned to public attention when it was praised by French critics such as André Bazin and re-released in 1956. In 1958, the film was voted number 9 on the prestigious Brussels 12 list at the 1958 World Expo. Citizen Kane was selected by the Library of Congress as an inductee of the 1989 inaugural group of 25 films for preservation in the United States National Film Registry for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".[7][8][9] "

Just re-watched "East of Eden" on DVD tonight. What a great flick. James Dean gives a stellar performance. What a loss he was. Dean went on to film another classic, Giant. Dean died not too long after in a car accident in a new Porsche he had nicknamed "Little Bastard", on his way to a racetrack in Salinas.

A lot of famous people died in car/plane accident back then. They (the cars/planes) were quite unsafe especially and quite ironically the luxury kind that were more about speed and comfort than say holding onto the road . Since then thanks to computerized simulations both have been rendered a lot safer.

Yes, all true. Except in this case it was a matter of a relatively small car (a Porsche sports car) vs a much heavier American car (a Ford Tudor). The Porsche wound up flipping over and over, whereas the Ford was pretty much intact. Plus, Dean died from his multiple injuries while the Ford driver was relatively uninjured. Dean was going way faster than the speed limit. The two cars basically met head on. Dean was on his way to a racetrack, and his mechanic (passenger) had advised him to drive the new Porsche all the way there instead of (more sensibly) hauling it on a trailer. It was basically a recipe for disaster. But yes, cars today are much more survivable in an accident, although it still would have been a nasty crash considering the speed and relative car weights.

Did a little more research on the 1950 Ford Tudor.
It weighed at least 3110 lbs, which would be more than 2.5 times the weight of the Porsche Spyder that Dean was driving (1210 lbs).

Watched Bullet Train last night.
Follows the general outline of the book, but still quite different - though not in a bad way. Really enjoyed it.

I'm guessing the Tudor is a two-door.

Tonight enjoying a local broadcast of the NY Philharmonic playing Beethoven's amazing Ninth Symphony, in their newly refurbished concert hall. Tochter aus Elysium! Arguably, the best version of all times (and would you believe it, I found it on youtube!): Beethoven - Symphony n°9 - Berlin / Furtwängler (conductor) 1942
