All you are saying is that you cannot view the world outside your dogma. Bummer. Freon If "appealing to a dictionary definition" for the sake of "agreeing to terms" is "the inability to view the world outside your dogma" for you, then I don't know with whom you could have a reasonable conversation. Agreeing to terms would be the essential first step to having meaningful conversation to pursue understanding. Seems to me that insisting on ad hoc and idiosyncratic meanings demonstrates the desire to obfuscate rather than communicate—in other words, to "play weird games." You've stated the problem perfectly, though you didn't mean to. I do not agree that it is a definitional issue with a dictionary. It is only a definitional issue with the dictionaries YOU choose to use. You don't check all of them, you just go to the easiest one, and whatever that says, you assume is authoritative. You don't even TRY to understand my points, even when I lay out exactly what I mean. Instead, you focus on words that I might bend a meaning on, and divert the thread to how you do not approve of my usage. But you don't do it always, and you NEVER do it for yourself. You imply regularly, and you assume I'll understand your implication, but the same does not work in reverse. It's a double-standard, and I won't play that game. Nothing stops a convo with me faster than when the other party is inconsistent. That's a line that cannot be crossed. But you be you, Mercy, not that you have a choice. Every time you are inconsistent and authoritative, I will call you on it. And your reputation for being that way will continue to be well known. Freon

Like saying one should not view art created by people who play with colors. Freon You insist that purple is yellow. Purple CAN be yellow, depending on the filter over your eyes. And what a wonderful metaphor that is as well. Please stop trying to use science, you're REALLY bad at it. Freon

But you see, I really don't have to. If you can't understand basic English, that's on you. I believe I communicate clear enough for any AMERICAN to understand, lol. And any Brit, or French person, apparently. It only seems the Canadians have an issue. Course I work with Canadians, mostly in Vancouver, talk with them nearly every day. They also don't seem to have an issue. So hmmmm. Everyone seems to be able to understand me, except one person. And that one person believes that their grasp of the English language is so authoritative, that any deviation from their point of view is inaccurate. Which to believe, which to believe... Freon

If you don't like the title of this thread, I suggest you create a new thread with a title you prefer.
This thread is titled "Is Trump 'The King Of Pettiness'?".
OK?
You know what the winkie means, right?
"Winkie" has multiple meanings.
Which do you prefer?
I like the definition in the Wizard of Oz:
What's your favorite winkie?

Freon IF that were true, why would you complain that there are multiple dictionaries? Games. That question is illogical. The core point is that you believe your command of the English language is so totally flawless, that anyone who uses terminology in a way YOU don't understand, necessitates conversation stoppage due to your incapability to deduce what the intent of the message actually was. You're saying you are too stupid to understand my meaning, because my terminology is too complex for you. Ok, I can understand that. Don't assume you understand, assume you DON'T, and you will always ask the right questions. Easy. Freon

Just to be clear, your authoritative dogma is the filter. Get it? Did you get it? Do I need to explain using different terms that you look up in a dictionary? Freon Just to be clear, you are the authority on science? Games. Only in comparison to you. In the world I come from, I'd say my knowledge of science is adequate, but not exceptional. Put more practically, it means when each of us says something about science, the likelihood of my being accurate is higher than your being accurate. It does NOT mean I know everything about science. But if we use pre-college American school levels as a comparison, I'd be in 10th or 11th grade, and you'd be in 3rd or 4th. The difference is that stark. Now, if we were talking the history of religion, likely those numbers would be reversed. I know what I don't know. But you clearly do not. Freon

Even your comments regarding purple and yellow light in this very thread, demonstrate the most basic understanding of physics. And that's barely high school level. As an experiment, I just asked my 15 year old the same question. I asked, 'where could yellow light be construed as purple, or vice versa', and his response was, 'on another planet, with a different color sun?'. Yeah, nailed it. Why didn't you? You think a high school training in science puts you anywhere even close to what a fully trained scientists knows, Mr. Dunning–Kruger? Freon
