It's happening!
Now then, let's repeat the process in Iraq, Syria, Libya and every other nation-state we're not at war with.

Indeed. I was embedded with the Afghans for months about a decade ago. The author of this article 'gets it' is many ways, but doesn't in others. He is, as he put it, a 'technocrat', and interacting at the macro, not the micro level, and probably didn't live and eat with the Afghans like some did. There is so much wrong about the notions we as Americans have about Afghanistan as Americans that it requires a great deal of unpacking. One of the things that people like to point at is things like this: Kids, please. This was 'a thing' in Kabul, or perhaps Kandahar, Herat or Jalalabad, but outside of those places....? Nope. It always seemed to me that Afghanistan was a collection of localities that (sorta) answered to Kabul. and that's it. Anyhow, if any of you have questions, I would be glad to answer them.

SourceThe only way this war is going to end (at least, our involvement) is if Congress ends funding for its operations.

We should've been moving faster on this earlier this year.

CNNThis is so Vietnam like. Taliban will be in Kabul when we're still getting people out. Twenty years of training and equipping a national defense system that falls apart immediately. Everyone knew it would all fall apart but nobody wanted to be blamed. Part of war's self-sustenance.

CNNThis is so Vietnam like. Taliban will be in Kabul when we're still getting people out. The speed of collapse has been surprising. A lot of people - people who have been involved in Afghanistan for a while - thought the government would hold out longer than this. We've spent more in Afghanistan than we did the Marshall Plan - a mark we exceeded back in 2014. This really has been an indictment of U.S. policy over the last 20 years. The Inspector General spoke on this last month: 'The issue, Sopko said, is that “the job” has had many faces since fall 2001. What started as a mission to dismantle the Taliban government that allowed al-Qaida to train in Afghanistan morphed into a nation-building exercise, an effort to beat back numerous insurgent groups and strengthen a central Afghan government and military that would eventually fend for itself... Sopko quipped that military leadership on the ground “turned the corner” so many times that they’ve been going in circles for years, and it appears the U.S. has settled back into its original goal in Afghanistan.' ( Source) Couple that with not addressing corruption in the government or Pakistan's involvement. And yet, some of the usual suspects want us to stay and keep doing the same old thing.

Imagine if we went with nuclear power backnin the carter days and moved towards energy independence. You know we would not care about the Middle East.
And now we have biden moving away from independence again.
Well I guess it’s good for politicians foundation contributions from Middle East countries.

I think too often we suspect people want what we have. When in this case they are a tribal culture with many subcultures each with their own interests for their own small areas.

All the negative news about the pending collapse and the awful conditions sure to follow the Taliban's re-seizure of Afghanistan is being laid at the feet of the Biden admin, as it should. So many military types are complaining about how it should have been "conditions based" as opposed to an announced time line. Conditions based means we're not leaving, ever. I mean, look how successful the conditions are in Germany, Japan and S.K., yet we're still there, lol.

I'm hearing conflicting stories on whether or not we left a lot of equipment behind. Anyone have news on this? I saw one story about "60 planeloads" of equipment being shipped out ot Afghanistan, but 20 years worth of presence should yield quite a bit more than that.
Glad we are leaving, but once again Biden is just copying Trump's idea. I agreed with Trump, so I guess I have to agree with Biden carrying out Trump's notion from over four years ago.
