These hearings are going to be a farce that glosses over the real issues in Afghanistan to assign partisan blame in preparation for 2024.
Why did it go so badly? Just read the SIGAR reports: massive corruption, ghost soldiers, and Taliban infiltration of local governments.
Why were Afghan partners left behind? Well, part of that is on Congress Mr. McCaul. There was legislation to speed up that process, but it did not pass.

Hilarious. It's like Alice in Wonderland shit. trump is the one who made this deal with the Taliban. Without any input from the Afghan "government" and his original deal was for us to leave by the end of May. Biden pushed that to August. So the GQP wants to investigate why this went so bad.....I wonder at what point in time their "investigation" will start at. Will it start with probing the decisions (made and not made) once trump clinched this deal? Will it look at orders DOD gave to the force commanders to prepare for departure by the end of May 2020? Or will the "investigation" start and focus solely on what transpired only since Jan 20, 2021? Hell, I'd be curious to know if trump even told Esper about the deal he made or if the Secretary of Defense only knew about it from the press. trump once described his administration running "like a well oiled machine." At some point the oil burned away and things seized up. It'll be nice to know why.

I really wish this would be an honest accounting of everything that happened in Afghanistan over the last 20 years, but it won't be.
We're going to ignore everything else and focus on one thing that could have maximum partisan effect and electoral benefits.
And in the end, we'll have learned nothing and will do it all over again somewhere else.

The withdrawal was the least of our fuck ups.
Going in was the worst.
Staying and killing tens of thousands of people was the inevitable course of invading in the first place.
The countless illegal killings in pursuit of the drone war and the Spec Ops bullshit raids based on false "intelligence".
But yeah, let's focus on the exit...

Read and listened to a lot of terrible takes on Afghanistan withdrawal anniversary (including people continuing to mischaracterize the $80 billion figure); a good tonic for all that crap:

What a farce
If you read a bit further, I think you'll see why the generals don't come in for any criticism, because they shared McCaul's position on continuing to maintain a U.S. troop presence in Afghanistan, despite the fact it wouldn't have altered the ultimate outcome which was coming down the pipe.
