I liked this article, though it came across as a bit over the top. I suppose it is because I was over there some 12 years ago. It was and remains my opinion that no one who was over there and paid attention in Afghanistan (and Iraq for that matter) should have been the least bit surprised at how it ended. We were propping up a corrupt government, so corrupt that it bled over to us. One thing I noticed when I first got there was all the UCMJ stuff posted regarding servicemembers, overwhelmingly for white-collar shit. There was so much fucking money over there your integrity had to be impeccable. One thing that this article addressed was about promises being made. One thing I never did in either place is promise a local national something I couldn't deliver (keep in mind this is at the micro-level - I was no big fish). You do that and don't deliver, your word is shot. If you are interested in corruption on a grand scale, I searched for, and found, the article I was referencing in the 'Fat Leonard' thread I started (that got no traction). Here it is, and have your airbag ready. It's from 2016 and appeared in the Washington Post: www.washingtonpost.com/sf/investigative/2016/05/27/the-man-who-seduced-the-7th-fleet/

We were propping up a corrupt government, so corrupt that it bled over to us. I think that's the main thing. People on the ground knew what was going on. But as it was reported up, the information kept getting more and more filtered, so policy makers weren't getting complete information or just flat out ignored information because it wasn't what they wanted to hear.
