I really don't care one way or the other. Tempest in a teapot. This is not a "tempest in a teapot" So it's a tempest in a water-filled sink.

I disapprove for a couple reasons: First, we aren't the world's policeman. We shouldn't have our troops and ships in the region, period. If our people weren't there, they wouldn't be getting attacked, and we have no obligation to sacrifice our own resources and manpower for private businesses operating in non-US territory and/or other foreign nations. Second, I believe that ships/troops should have the freedom to defend themselves while being attacked which would include targeting sites from which attacks were carried out -but- coordinated and planned strikes like these should require Congressional authority. The Constitution never intended for the President to take military action and then inform Congress afterwards, it's supposed to be the other way around. Congress informs the President to take action.

It's god damned anti American to disapprove. Every bullet and bomb we spend on spreading sacred democracy represents a good paying middle class American job.
Love it or leave it! Queshank
It's not "spreading democracy", it's "stopping a bunch of deluded fuck heads from messing with world trade..ooops... protecting $600p.m. sailors"
You missed the joke. "Global trade" is the new "democracy."

Do you approve? Disapprove? This has been going on since October, plenty of time for the administration to go to Congress and get the authorization that is required by the Constitution and by statute. That's the part I disapprove of.
But a few strikes aren't likely to do much as far as stopping the Houthis from lobbing missiles, drones, etc. Don't forget that we and the Saudis have been fighting the Houthis since 2015 (part of the reason they have those missiles in the first place).

Welcome back, demos.
I've been in a bit of an ignorant state without your thread bumps to inform me of WTF is going on in the world.
Ideally, the Congress should pass an AUMF to address the piracy/harrassment of shipping, to keep things legal. That said, should they or are we getting too involved in merchant affairs, disguised as national security?

Eep. Almost forgot. This is what it's like to live at the end of a golden age.
Queshank
Does the end of a Golden Age like, sort of, just down - step to a silver age (which is still pretty good) or is it worse than that? To be honest, my material needs are modest, I'd be OK with bronze. A bronze age.... oh... errr.....

As I started telling my kids when I started making the comment.
It'll be fine. Not the first time. Humanity has been here before. Hence the "this is what it's like..."
And just because one golden age is sunsetting, doesn't mean a new one can't begin.
Don't worry limey. You're winning. You will have government control over every aspect of people's lives soon enough. As you wish Queshank

That said, should they or are we getting too involved in merchant affairs, disguised as national security? Trade - or merchant affairs - has always been an aspect of/reason for U.S. military action (or "covert" actions). We went to war with the Barbary pirates twice over attacks on U.S. merchant vessels (it should be noted this was a direct attack on U.S. citizens and vessels). And free flow of trade is important to our interests.
That said, I don't think these strikes are going to solve the problem (Iran will just keep feeding them missiles and/or drones throughout just like they've been doing since 2016). And there's the added complication that we have troops in Iraq and Syria who are just sitting ducks for retaliation by various militia groups.
Some people, such as Adm Stavridis, have suggested actually going ashore, because apparently we haven't learned any lessons since 2001.

Not what l want (even if I was the government). Is what you publicly express support for. So ... ?
This reminds me of my recent conversations with Maestro. In a war there's only 2 sides. The "nuanced" viewpoints don't make the history books. It's fine that we all have them. I do too. But it just doesn't matter.
The victors of this war will give zero shits about our personal nuances.

Denmark is the nuanced viewpoint (on the question of "government controls everything". It's not in the history books, because quiet, contented, happy prosperity isn't news. Gaza is news. Yemen is news. MAGA is news. Putin is news. News is tomorrow's history.

Why is it when people who champion political movements that place a high priority on diversity look to a paragon of leftist governance, they always point to the most homogeneous countries in the world?
Human beings are clannish limey. It is our very nature to be clannish. For decades here I have talked about how libertarianism won't work because "there's no more frontiers to go to to get away from other people."
90% of the people of Denmark are white, of Danish descent and somewhere in the neighborhood of 80% of them all go to "The Church of Denmark." Not just are christians. Members of "The Church of Denmark."
It's very easy for a people to look out for their own clan.
True nuance.

Obama, Trump, and Biden should be in prison. Obama joined in the attacks on Yemen to "placate the Saudis". Lmao. Trump didn't stop it. Just kept on helping. But I'm sure he'll totally rein in the intelligence community and military industrial complex if he wins this time!! Biden faked like the US was going to withdrawal support, but then his puppet-string-pullers reversed course and we're right back in the "fight". Why are the Houthis conducting such terrible attacks now? Jerks. They hate our freedom, that's why. But you are going to vote for trump because of reasons.......

This is where I get upset at the Establishment or, as you nerds say, the blob. I can get behind a POTUS having some wiggle room with the use of military assets, given such short time windows to respond to events, but this? There's plenty of time for the Congress to empower the POTUS with an AUMF to continue hostilities. If they don't want to respond militarily, they should either impeach or cut off funding. The ever expanding Executive will not end well.
