Ohio state Republican lawmakers are once again trying to overturn the will of the people, after a devastating loss on abortion rights. Ohioans overwhelmingly chose to enshrine abortion protections in the state Constitution earlier this week. Republicans had tried multiple times to block the referendum, called Issue 1, but they were handily defeated every time. So on Friday, the state GOP unveiled a new tactic: stopping the courts from allowing the new amendment to take effect. “To prevent mischief by pro-abortion courts with Issue 1, Ohio legislators will consider removing jurisdiction from the judiciary over this ambiguous ballot initiative,” Republican state representatives said in a press release. “The Ohio legislature alone will consider what, if any, modifications to make to existing laws based on public hearings and input from legal experts on both sides.”
The Ohio court system is ultimately controlled by conservative justices. Either way likely wouldn't matter that much but having the legislature rework those laws and rules is actually the more democratic of the processes. The most democratic way is/was the way it was done. Ohio voted to enshrine access to abortion in their constitution.

Vote them out if you don't like it. That's how it works. What Fid is saying is that the elected officials shouldn't act on their power. That isn't true. They should use their powers for what they feel is right and if the people don't like not, they'll elect a new group. so why vote on anything after electing people? 🙄 This is a republic. What you are talking about is direct democracy.

All the laws that currently exist have to be repealed and/or replaced if they are found to violate the new amendment: "...Are all the restrictions gone, and is abortion totally legal? No. Each restriction needs to be taken to court and repealed. There have been 31 abortion restrictions passed since 2011, according to OURR. However, Democrats can propose legislation that would eliminate all of the restrictions — and they plan to do so. It is significantly more likely that this will be dealt with in court, considering the GOP has a supermajority and it would be shocking to see them pass protections for abortion..." ohiocapitaljournal.com/2023/11/09/issue-1-passed-in-ohio-protecting-abortion-rights-now-what/?utm_source=substack&utm_medium=email

This conversation and the link that Fiddler provided are discussing what they are trying to do about existing laws.

The laws that currently exist are going to be challenged in the courts, where ultimately they will go to the state supreme court which is controlled by republicans, or they can systematically be addressed directly through the legislature which is also controlled by the republicans. The more democratic of the two systems is the state legislature.

Yes, if they want no children. And no form of contraception is 100% No, no one should decide what a woman wants to do with her body, except the woman with advice from her doctor if needed I just explained that if she gets knocked up, she can immediately stop it before it even resembles a human. No abortion, no brain or would be person killed. If a man and woman have the children they wanted, the man could easily get a vasectomy and not be able to give birth again. No big deal.

Oh, that’s right. Maybe some here don’t know what a vasectomy is. Well, it is less complicated than abortion, and the man can still have all the sex he can handle, no problem. And the woman has no worries.
