This is the kind of bipartisanship we should all be embracing.
Five senators introduced a bill Tuesday that would grant priority for refugee status to Hongkongers fleeing government persecution or arrest.
The Hong Kong Safe Harbor Act was sponsored by Sens. Marco Rubio (R–Fla.), Todd Young (R–Ind.), Robert Menendez (D–N.J.), Benjamin Cardin (D–Md.), and Jeff Merkley (D–Ore.).

Just no. Why should we take in these people? How does it benefit us?

So much for the proponent of prayer to answer all human ills.

Just no. Why should we take in these people? How does it benefit us? Because they're the people that represent American ideals far better than ... well ... let's be honest for once... probably half our country and most of us posting here. You gonna walk the walk about being an American and believing in American principles? Or just talk the talk?

I believe in American principles for Americans. I don’t care about foreigners. I have always said, “We aren’t the world’s policeman.” Well, we aren’t the world’s animal shelter, either. Or are we obligated to take every stray? Where does it end?

I'm not going to boycott a country simply because that government doesn't respect freedom. I'm not going to be a hypocrite. If I boycotted China because the Chinese government is shit then in order to remain consistent I would have to boycott my country and just about any other country around the world. I have no desire to be homeless and starve. The most offensive and intrusive dictatorial decree (on top of all the business closures) today where I live: "Gatherings in homes of individuals who don’t shelter together is prohibited." Fuck that. And just two days before Independence Day. Good luck with enforcement. dhs.saccounty.net/PUB/Documents/ME-HealthOrderStayAtHome20200702.pdf

That’s gestapo-like. Here in Honolulu, our mayor is mandating the wearing of masks in indoor establishments and all outdoor areas where there might be crowds.

Or are we obligated to take every stray? Where does it end? By that logic, we never should have made Hawaii a US territory, let alone the 50th state. After all, they were foreigners, and not even white, right?
What would that make you, sir?

How dare your local and state government try to protect you from what can be a fatal viral infection! They have some nerve! Don't they know you'd rather be dead???

Or are we obligated to take every stray? Where does it end? What has always made America great has been the ability to take in people fleeing just about anything and allow them the freedom to prosper. Now that doesn't mean we have to give any person coming here a free handout but just the opportunity to make a living and take care of their families is good enough.

I am 100% on your side. But at the same time, I have to point out that these types of outraged statements do more to discredit those of us who are skeptical of the "narrative" than help. I got in a bunch of shit on a page on facebook because I took the owners of the group to task for comparing people refusing to stay indoors to Rosa Parks. We're not fucking Rosa Parks. That's fucking insane. It both cheapens "our" cause and minimizes the danger from the government to use rhetoric like that.
And I also think you're overlooking something. Chinese businesses are not divorced and removed from the Chinese government. United States businesses are. (Which is why I specifically illustrated American businesses I stopped doing business with over their siding with China over the Hong Kong dissidents.)
Not to mention ... the United States government isn't the one trying to lock down your ability to move freely. That's California.

I had the most disturbing conversation with someone in Hawaii a few weeks ago when I called to ask about how the quarantines were impacting their business.
Is it true they are broadcasting photos of people seen on the beaches on local television and saying shit like "Have you seen this person?" so they can track them down and fine them?
Is it true that neighbors are reporting each other for leaving their homes? Like the story she told about a woman who had to travel to San Diego and on returning was told to quarantine for 14 days. One day she took her dog outside and her neighbor reported her and she was fined $4,000. (She elaborated to say she was able to fight it down to $2,000....)
How much of that is true and how much embellished "telephone game" shit?

The reflexive action will be sanctions. What should we do depends on your perspective I suppose. Honestly, not much we can do to change Chinese internal politics/policies. We can accept refugees (we won't), we can work with our regional allies/partners to bolster their security, and/or we can lead international efforts to criticize/punish China through the UN, etc. (we won't). As for what US citizens will do, you can bet you won't see any NBA jerseys saying Free Hong Kong. The United States should be offering refugee status to every single citizen of Hong Kong. Or at least the UK should. They're the ones who cut the deal with China that China just said "fuck you" to. Queshank This. The entire Western world should have their doors open to HK. The UK has and the old Common Wealth countries should follow suit.

Would China, with a large centralized govt, be considered left or more of a tea party decentralized govt?

Yep, hard to take the moral high ground and refuse to do business with those evil commies when our own governments are acting like evil commies. I think there's a signif dif between a broadly legitimate, if often mistaken, over-reaching and incompetent Government on the one hand, and on the other, a Government that is explicitly opposed to basic concepts of freedom, democracy and the rule of law. Behaving in an authoritarian manner intermittently on certain issues isn't the same as being an authoritarian nightmare.

Would China, with a large centralized govt, be considered left or more of a tea party decentralized govt? Aren't you almost implicitly assuming by the wording of this question that large centralized governments are by definition left? Isn't right-wing centralization a thing?
