Leftists (not liberals) apply the conservative political label to anyone that isn't in lockstep agreement with the supremacy of the state in all matters.

Libertarianism evolved from classical liberalism. Yes, in that evolution a right-wing or conservative strain of libertarianism emerged but it is not the only strain, nor the dominant.

Bleeding heart libertarians exist. I am one.

Regarding your claim about welfare, not *all* libertarians oppose government social programs. Some do, many do not. I don't.

There is a good argument that government regulation itself has been used for reactionary or conservative ends, as often as not. I believe you've been around for those discussions.

Show me the conservatives who support un-regulated capitalism or ending social programs. I don't see them. In fact, conservatives have a history of being against capitalism (the liberals were the original defenders of capitalism, against the reactionary right who wanted to preserve the ancien regime).

The conservative movement in the US flirted with the rhetoric of free markets for a bit but those days are long gone. Now we are in the era of national or populist conservatism. That means tariffs, industrial planning, immigration controls, and a greater deal of government intervention in religious and cultural matters. 

Conservatives are coming home. The truth of the matter is they never were that committed to free markets in the first place. It doesn't fit well with a desire for slow change and tradition.

I'd further note that no example was given of a particular policy position of mine that could be considered conservative. You essentially said: "you're a libertarian and libertarians are conservatives." 

There are conservative libertarians. True enough. But to say that *all* libertarians are conservative is wrong. In fact, you're talking to one who self identifies as a liberal. And I'd argue I am to the left of most who consider themselves on the left.

A dirty little secret is that there is a great deal of illiberalism (read: reactionary conservatism) in certain left-wing policy positions. Part of my project on LNF has been to point it out and I relish doing so. Whether it is the subject of zoning and housing affordability, or minimum wage laws and eugenics, or firearms regulation and race, or occupational licensing and poverty, or the capitalist economic order itself, there are many instances where our leftwing friends have unwittingly taken reactionary/conservative positions.

Just as libertarians have a lot to learn from the left about race and gender, the importance of tax funded public goods, the value of a social safety net, and the importance of community and the collective, the left has a lot to learn from libertarians about being better (and more consistent) leftists.
