Back before Google and the internet, I read somewhere that his actual quote was "couldn't like" instead of "didn't like".
I think "couldn't" is better. It makes more sense to have to look for something to like in some people.

BTW, Life Begins At 40 was surprisingly good. It has Will Rogers at his finest, IMHO, although I haven't seen all his movies. It's a shame that just a few months after he made the film, and three others, that he died in a plane crash with Wiley Post in north Alaska. What a loss.
