Why do you consistently leave out the part where the troops were left to guard the oil fields? Where do I leave that out? What thread do you think you're posting in ffs? Why not go back and start with the very first page. I was pointing that your claim that only a few hundred were left is wrong. Pretty much all of the troops that were in Syria stayed in Syria. And the troops in Al Tanf aren't guarding any oil; never have been. Oh great, another dumb ass post. Sorry fool, you never mentioned guarding the oil wells. The 900 left to do so was part of the 2500 sent to train Syrian rebels. So, while the withdrawal was "tactical" in nature, it was left to the US to guard the wells. Or one could try reading the OP title.

Hey dumbass, you’re posting in a thread I started in July 2020 about US troops guarding oil wells.
Also, there were only 1,000 troops officially in Syria when Trump’s “withdrawal” occurred (not 2,500). There are still 900 there.
If anyone in this thread needs to do any reading, it’s you. You can start by reading more than headlines.

There is no legal, constitutional authority for our presence in Syria. We should withdraw instead of allowing US troops to continue to be targets to satisfy Iran and Russia hawks.

NOW a good time to point out we're not getting out of Syria?

NOW a good time to point out we're not getting out of Syria? We would if Congress could find its cojones and a) cut funding for Syria operations or b) pass a war powers resolution. But don't hold your breath.

SourceThis was a foreseeable problem that we've (the U.S. and other states) allowed to get to this point.

SourceWe have no legal authority to be in Syria. We have no vital interests in Syria. Now would be the perfect time to end our illegal special military operations abroad (boots, drones, advisors - all of 'em). Not only would it help rein in the level of violence we inflict, it would send a clear message to the world that the US is not like Russia and is at least trying to act more appropriately.

More likely Iranian-backed fighters, as with prior attacks on U.S. troops.

A direct attack on U.S. bases in Syria would be a big step up in escalation in that region, especially since both sides have worked to avoid just such a conflict in Syria. We also know who has been attacking U.S. bases in Syria prior to this.
