Red River also stars Walter Brennan and John Ireland. Directed by Howard Hawks. Interesting sidelight: most of the cast and key personnel on the filming were given commemorative silver and gold belt buckles with the "Red River D" brand in gold on silver. These were highly prized collector items, and later a number of imitations were made for diehard John Wayne fans. Wayne himself wore his RRD buckle on many of his subsequent films. Red River was great. The Searchers was better. I vote for anything western that starred John Wayne, from "The Big Trail" to "The Shootist" and everything in between.
Quigley Down Under, Tombstone, Open Range, Ride with the Devil and Broken Trail for more recent stuff. Even the Hatfield and McCoys miniseries was good.
If you want to see a mighty western shootout, watch the ending of The Wild Bunch from 1969...William Holden, Ernest Borgnine, Ben Johnson and Warren Oates against an entire Mexican army in 1913.
Hell, for alternative styes, the Mandalorian is a space western as was the Firefly TV series.
Enjoy.

Two more westerns I have enjoyed that are not as common or well known: Renegade 2004 and Bone Tomahawk 2015.
Renegade has some awesome peyota/ayahuasca vision quest scenes and a pretty cool guilt/redemption story about self forgiveness. This is not your typical western.
And neither is 2015's Bone Tomahawk. This one is a thriller/horror in the second half. I know that seems kinda cheesy but its better than it sounds.

Is more than one True Grit, "True Grits"? Greg The latest one really really sucked, so the plural is not needed. Bridges was horrible as was Damon. Hailee Steinfeld was not bad, but none of them compare to the John Wayne version. Even Glen Campbell, as bad as he was at acting, was a better fit for the Texas Ranger. And Duvall as Lucky Ned was perfect. I'd say that's pretty bold talk for a one eyed fat man! You know what. A "GOOD" western (or any movie for that matter) is SO GOOD you already know the dialog before it's spoken in the film. I was watching the second "True Grit" with my kids when it came out and as the actors were speaking the dialog, *I* was speaking what they were going to say before they said it. The kids found it irritating. "You’re a damned nuisance! Lawyer Daggett! Lawyer Daggett! Who is this famous pleader whose name I was happily ignorant of ten minutes ago?" Greg

Greg But would you have known the dialog without the 1969 True Grit? What's interesting is that folks in the 19th century actually did talk like that.
And I still have both eyes, but you got the fat man part right. And the famous response? "Fill your hands, you son of a....biscuit!"

Was Kay Parker in that one? Dang, Beau! Conjuring her memory nearly put my eyes out! Not sure I recall her face, though.
I'm guessing that most of the forum todgers, being senior citizens, know who she was, but I'd be curious who here doesn't.
Google says she is/was a porn actress... I guess my todger is not senior enough.
