I'm disappointed slightly that nobody thought to nominate "Blazing Saddles"...

But seriously, "GoodFellas" is a masterpiece, just like "Raging Bull"... Don't tell me that you people hated "Raging Bull" too!!! Is that a pticher about a rodeo? Greg It's about Jake LaMotta.

Well, I see that I already mentioned Red Rider, and Red River Valley. But in reviewing my DVD collection I found another "Red" Western, which the packaging touts as the best Western ever. Yup, starring John Wayne and Monte Cliff, it's "Red River". So I stuck it in the player and am about 1/2 hour into it. Not bad, even though it's only B&W and 4:3 scope.
All about driving cattle in Texas after the War (doesn't specify which one) between the Red River and the Rio Grande.
"Beef to feed all the hungry people!" pronounces a suitably socialistic Wayne.
Then he kills a Mexican who came to evict Wayne off the land Wayne is trying to claim.

Red River also stars Walter Brennan and John Ireland. Directed by Howard Hawks.
Interesting sidelight: most of the cast and key personnel on the filming were given commemorative silver and gold belt buckles with the "Red River D" brand in gold on silver. These were highly prized collector items, and later a number of imitations were made for diehard John Wayne fans. Wayne himself wore his RRD buckle on many of his subsequent films.

It's on my list. Mind you, it's plot is a reworking of "Mutiny on the Bounty". Still GOOD though. Greg

Greg The plot is based on a magazine series story, with some changes to make it have a happier ending. I didn't see any white whales, so far, in Red River, but maybe Marlon Brando will make a guest appearance.

Trinity is Still My Name
Or one from Tim Blake Nelson (underrated imho)

Not sure I'd classify Treasure of the Sierra Madre as a Western. Although Bogart's performance was Oscar-worthy, for sure.
I fell asleep last night trying to finish Red River. I did notice that Montgomery Clift (in his first movie appearance) strove mightily to appear interested in his female counterpart in their alleged love scene. She had to take the lead, which may have been type-casting on Hawks' part, LOL.

Whichever way, two thumbs up, baby!

That's my list! Well, almost, I've never seen Joe Kidd. But yes to the others. I also believe Keoma is worth a mention. Italians make my favorite westerns. (And some of the best horror movies)

Greg The latest one really really sucked, so the plural is not needed. Bridges was horrible as was Damon. Hailee Steinfeld was not bad, but none of them compare to the John Wayne version. Even Glen Campbell, as bad as he was at acting, was a better fit for the Texas Ranger. And Duvall as Lucky Ned was perfect.

My preferred movie with lots of "fucks" in it? "GoodFellas" Was Kay Parker in that one? Dang, Beau! Conjuring her memory nearly put my eyes out! Not sure I recall her face, though.
I'm guessing that most of the forum todgers, being senior citizens, know who she was, but I'd be curious who here doesn't.
