Public property is used for all sorts of purposes, some of them quite grotesque. I am thinking about the FBI, ICE, Border Patrol, state and local police, prisons, etc. If all of that non-sense is tolerated and allowed, certainly we can tolerate some murals expressing solidarity and love. What solidarity and love do the so-called murals represent? The looters, etc, who now seem to represent BLM are anything but loveable.

I think they are. I see BLM and the message I get is: "Black lives are valuable and its time to protect them as such." I read that as a message of solidarity and love. I don't. At all. I see it as a propaganda piece doubling down on brainwashing that is directly harming the social fabric of America. I object to my tax dollars being used in that manner. Queshank

Why? was the BLM painted on the street to bring some temporary awareness to a problem. Where's the statues were installed a hundred years ago to intimidate and emphasis white power. Using the public space and public funds to push political messages half the country disagrees with is either wrong or it isn't. Queshank What potitical message in the public space is okay? Lincolm memorial or Lincoln lifting up the poor ragged slave. Statue of Liberty offers a now increasingly bs propaganda political message. Do you say that it should come down? And all those Jim Crow statues making political points on town squares all other the south and scattered around the north too, do you want them l torn down.

Tear em all down. I'm fine with it.
The Statue of Liberty's "bs propaganda political message" is far more in line with reality now than at any time in its existence. It literally was "bs propaganda" for nearly 100 years, even as poets were waxing euphoric about it.
But tear that shit down too if half the country doesn't want to pay to maintain it.
Or better yet as both Jasmine and I have suggested ... privatize it. Let the people who support it pay for it. I'll throw a few bucks the statue of liberty's way. Make it happen cap'n.

Let me further this a bit. Apparently, George Washington was a racist slave owner. Abe Lincoln, too. And Thomas Jefferson.
Should we remove all of their images from our currency? Should we erase them from our history books?
How far do we we want to go?

How do you guys feel about Bill deBlasio using public property to construct a “BLM” mural? It shouldn't be allowed. The government should not be building murals or using public property to promote political messages.

That’s why I find it befuddling how some people can approve of the removal of public monuments on the basis of “it’s on public property” - yet approve of a political message on public property. It’s weird to me.

It's as wrong as confederate statues. Queshank I agree. Put the mural in a private museum or something.
Is that your professional opinion?

Sure.. Maybe we'll get to those after we've removed the memorials to Hitler, Mussolini, Hirohito .. and any other former enemies of the U.S. ..

Only if one were to regard the Confederacy as the true American democracy.
Which apparently some still do.
Sad.

I prefer the government to focus on providing it's services as efficiently as possible. That means buildings and infrastructure should be plain, boring, and utilitarian in nature. Murals, statues, and monuments are wasteful and unnecessary for the government mission. These things have to be constantly maintained and they can and often do cause division. It's best for the government to just focus on what it is supposed to be doing.

You say it as if it was the only aspect of the messages. It's like saying talking about houses on public displays is either wrong or it isn't, or raising public awareness on public boards is either wrong or it isn't.

It's best for the government to just focus on what it is supposed to be doing. I almost entirely agree. Ideally, public spaces shouldn't be used to celebrate anybody, but historically they have and continue to do so. I'd prefer a removal of all idols and any reference to religion. But, if promoting a message is in society's best interest, such as acknowledging the BLM movement in the here and now (to keep a part of society from burning the place down), I can suffer it. Again, ideally, I agree with your POV and believe no statues is better than any statues.
