How about these? None came recommended and I enjoyed all. I have no idea if they were publicly or commercially successful. Sticking with some of the same actors as several earlier posts 1) 7 Psychopaths - Christopher Walken 2) Bad Times at the El Royale - Jeff Bridges 3) Unbreakable - Bruce Willis 4) Paul 5) Knives Out Bonus This is a series, but only 3 parts and has a no sequel ever ending. It's about 2.5 hours, so basically, a british made for tv movie broadcast in 1 hour time slots. it's on Acorn TV 6) And Then There Were None I really liked Knives Out--surprises in a genre that tends to be formulaic. I liked Unbreakable, too. I think those are the only ones I've seen in your list.

But if I'm fighting battles with people and causing dissension and drawing lines between "true fans" and "posers" or whatever, then I've lost my way. That's something a poser would say. πππ π The challenge with nay sequel (Star Wars and others) is to be true to the original while avoiding formula and predictability. Tricky to say the least.

This might inspire me to start a thread on how each of us evaluates a movie. I thought about that a long time ago. I think when we say "that was a good movie," we mean it in almost a Platonic way--like, there is some "ideal of what a movie is/should be, and this movie approached that ideal." It might not even be as general as "movie" as it might be a specific genre--like, that was a "good science fiction movie" or a "good thriller."

Almost impossible. Some get around it by embracing formula and predictability (Indiana Jones, James Bond, etc.). That works well as long as the audience goes along with the conceit. Others try to find the balance. I'm usually more forgiving of sequels that overreach toward the new while trying to find that balance between new and old because I get what they're trying to do. This is why I like BTTF2 even though it is a drastically different movie than BTTF1 in many, many ways. They used similar imagery and scenes to keep the audience grounded in a wildly different plot and tone. It might not have worked for everyone, but I liked it.

For some reason when I saw it in a theater, when it came out, my date thought that bit was the funniest. It didn't do much for me, not sure why. Maybe I thought it was mocking people with speech impediments. Not sure. But I found the teamwork heart warming.
I did like Madeleine Kahn's bits, such as the "No tongue!" reprimands.
