“There will be no curiosity, no enjoyment of the process of life. All competing pleasures will be destroyed. But always— do not forget this, Winston— always there will be the intoxication of power, constantly increasing and constantly growing subtler. Always, at every moment, there will be the thrill of victory, the sensation of trampling on an enemy who is helpless.
If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face— forever. ”
― George Orwell, 1984

Let's hope it's an alternate timeline...

I just got chills. Orwell knew about MAGA in the 1940s. Only MAGA is intoxicated by power. Not journalists. Not Neocons. Not the Cheneys. Not the Clintons. Just MAGA.
And Orwell knew it.

You don't even have the self awareness to realize that you are on the side of the jack booted thugs, do you? Have you not witnessed the extremity of liberal efforts to censor and jail their opponents? That YOUR side has pulled out all of the stops in their quest for power?
It's no wonder you were a drone, a stormtrooper, in the military....it's who you are in private.

They pretend that Bannon’s charge and Trump’s felony conviction are just Rule of Law objectives. But nobody previously cared about Contempt of Congress carrying a prison sentence. Nobody goes to jail for financial records misdeeds that resulted in zero financial benefit. They pretend those are just objectively prosecuted by Lady Justice. As if authoritarian regimes don’t always layer political prosecutions under such a thinly masked disguise. The weaponization of the justice system under the current regime is the worst in a very long time.

That we should never grow, and become better at enforcing the rule of law? That now that we are doing so (as the result of egregious abuse), the ONLY reason is political? That's awfully convenient, when predominately your guys are the ones breaking the laws so badly. Freon

These type situations are best represented in leftist nations. Former ussr, Cuba, China, n Korea, Venezuela.
The left knows this.
They continually try to pin what leftists actually do on the center and right.

Nope. I’m saying that if victim-less crimes are historically lightly punished by fines or community service or not at all, and then suddenly they are severely punished with prison time, then that’s the weaponization of justice. If we start executing certain people for jaywalking, it doesn’t mean people who got away with jaywalking in the past were doing good things. It just means somebody is going after certain people they want dead, and using jaywalking as the thinly veiled bullshit legal reason to do so.

And Orwell knew it.Well, he spent his formative years immersed in a world where autocracy, totalitarianism, & democracy were tearing each other's throats out. He literally had his torn by a Fascist bullet, & soon after, escaped Stalinist murder by a whisker. You can forgive him being a tad antifa. And fa isn't new; wasn't then. It's easy to make parallels between antidemocrats of the past & now, despite differences of approach, degree, & honesty amongst them.

1984 turned out to be a fantasy, a well written one, but still a fantasy. Every time someone tries to tie it to current American politics I smile. You will learn to LOL at Big Brother. And then again Small Brother Orwell had his own "enemies" list. Oops.

It just means somebody is going after certain people they want dead, and using jaywalking as the thinly veiled bullshit legal reason to do so. Laws change with time, as do consequences. Used to be, if you had a joint of marijuana, you could go to jail, but now that's changed. Your argument is basically that all laws and consequences that change are done purely for putative reasons, and I cannot agree with that massive oversimplification. I like the fact that our laws are finally being enforced, and those who got away with crimes in the past, are suddenly being held accountable. This will make it so fewer in the future break those same laws, because they know those consequences will befall them as well. I can understand why you don't like it, because your people are the ones breaking those laws, and being held accountable for that, but they ARE breaking the law, and if you are cool with that, then you don't really care about the laws themselves, only the impacts they have on you.
