Well, that's a show I've never seen.
And after five minutes of it, never again.

Riders of the Purple Sage....
A couple three years ago I picked up a copy of Zane Grey's Western novel, "Riders of the Purple Sage". Not to be confused with the Grateful Dead's side band, "New Riders of the Purple Sage".
Anyway, I enjoyed the novel quite a bit, although some of the plot twists seemed a bit abrupt. But it's a good read.
As I was rifling through my DVD collection today I came across a copy I made a year or two ago of a broadcast of the movie based on the book. Complete with low budget daytime TV commercials, LOL. I figured out how to skip most of the commercials and set about viewing the movie in its entirety. Just finished it.
The book - and the movie - is set in 19th century Utah. Let's just say the Mormons do not come off very positively in either the book or the movie. It's filmed near Moab, which has spectacular scenery. Alas, no monolith yet, as the movie was dated 1996. But some of the scenes might actually be in the same spot, for all I know.
Anywho, it's a good enough flick. Ed Harris plays the notorious gunslinger Lassiter, and Amy Madigan plays the set upon heroine Jane Withersteen. I've visited Utah a number of times, back before this movie was made, although never made it to Moab. It's on my list now. Good riding and shooting!

In keeping with my last (or so) movie puzzler, I decided I needed to lower my blood pressure and popped in a DVD of The Sound of Music the other day.
I remember when this first came out. My older sister, who had moved out of the house to get her own job and apartment, decided to treat the rest of the family. I think it must have been 1965 or 1966. She'd already seen it, and wanted the rest of us to see it, in part because the movie family's flight from disaster sort of, in a very small way, matched our own family's not too distant experience.
I was about 14 at the time, and it was my first widescreen full sound movie experience. I remember being totally blown away by the opening, plastered back in my seat. What cinematography. What soundtrack. Awesome. Truly one of the great movies of all time. I haven't watched it in years; brought back sweet/sad memories.
Whats a DVD? When Im down I go on youtube and watch sports highlights of my teams winning championship. "Back to Faulk, Red Sox fans have long to hear it, the Boston Red Sox are world champions" It happens every years on average now. as for a movie? that's hard, there is so many. Fried Green Tomato's I guess could be one. Maybe the end of Young Guns two Mississippi Burning raises my blood pressure. Don't watch that after political issues today. Watch it 1st then CNN and you'll laugh at the news today.

Stumbled across a fascinating PBS/Nova special on a legendary organic chemist of the 30's and 40's: Percy Julian. Here's the video:

Nah, I'm too cheap for Prime etc.
I prefer free TV. One of these days I might actually contribute to the local PBS station again, though. I cut the cable about ten years ago, when digital broadcasts started.
I will however buy DVD's of favorite movies/TV shows.
Just finished binge watching Hanna on prime. Two seasons. Worth the watch Yeah, that was all right. If you have Prime and like sci-fi at all, definitely give The Expanse a watch.

Finished with "You Can't Take It With You", which was OK by me. Interesting to see Lionel Barrymore play the well grounded old patriarch who values people more than money. At the end he manages to persuade a somewhat evil tycoon to give up putting money over human relations. Perhaps a lesson for our time.
Next up, since I already had the Capra collection, was another one I'd never watched: "Mr. Deeds Goes To Town". Played by a very sedate Gary Cooper, Longfellow Deeds make a living in Vermont by writing copy for greeting cards and such. He is very popular in his little town, and plays tuba in the town band. But when his rich uncle in New York dies, Deeds becomes the sole inheritor of a $20 million fortune (probably worth a lot more in 1936 than today). A succession of conniving people attempt to separate Longfellow from his money, and even he doesn't really want it, but wants to give it away. Greed vs. Good... another lesson for our time?

Hey, it's so happens that I have a copy of the first four seasons. I'll definitely give it a try, when I get around to it. I've watched Disco and Picard and also Lowers Decks the three latest offshoots of the Star trek franchise... OK, but a little disappointing, especially Picard.

OK, but a little disappointing, especially Picard. We saw about half of the first (only?) season of Picard. It was okay, I guess. I'd love to know what you think of The Expanse. They try to deal with implications of physics that most other science fiction shows ignore. Unfortunately, they still can't avoid "sound in space" because Hollywood thinks viewers are dumb, but they get a lot of other stuff right. Some of it is pretty subtle and it's fleshed out more in the book. I really, really liked the book series. *EDIT: word of warning...you have to get a few episodes in. They kind of butchered the beginning by introducing a set of characters that look like they're going to be the main characters. Then they kill off a bunch. At that point I was hesitant to buy into the new characters because I wasn't sure who the main characters were going to be and which ones were going to be killed off next.

They did that in Game Of Thrones... They killed the first characters to appear within only a few episodes and then the ones you thought weren't going to last, sometimes managed to survive until the last episode of the series. Some people stopped watching because their favorite character on the show was killed off. It's hard to really empathize with the people as they are all ruthless assholes. The "good guys" are a little less ruthless than the bad ones but not by much. I'll watch the series as soon as I can fit it in my viewing schedule, I promise.

Over the weekend I moved on to "It Happened One Night", one of the more popular and acclaimed Capra movies. An interesting note on the production and the result: Capra had to sort of trick Claudette Colbert into taking the role, and she proved difficult to work with, seemingly resenting Capra for getting her to do the film. Later, when she was awarded the Oscar for Best Actress, in her acceptance speech she said, "graciously", "I really have to thank Frank Capra for this".
Looks like the drama wasn't only in front of the cameras for that film.
OK finished that flick, and started moving on to one I know I've seen before, "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington". Although it's very very famous, it doesn't seem to hold my interest like the others I've mentioned. Maybe because it's so familiar by now. Maybe because Jimmy Stewart sort of annoys me, don't know why.

Latest viewing pleasure is Ken Burn's multi-hour documentary on Mark Twain. I probably watched it over ten years ago, but it's still a revelation. Twain is one of my favorite authors, and of course Ken Burns does him full justice. I hope.

YES!
It's been playing on the local PBS station and I've been recording it to DVD.
