SourceHere is the bill: S 2745. The text is not up yet. Not really surprised by the names on this bill. But it's really counterproductive, and frankly unnecessary. We still have a lot of leverage over the Taliban, because they're going to need assistance - primarily economic - to govern. Designating them a terrorist organization would eliminate that leverage, because we wouldn't be able to use it since, "The senators also aim to make sure that U.S. taxpayer money does not go to any foreign terrorist organizations that may be present in Afghanistan." Also, the Taliban isn't terrorist organization is the same sense as AQ or ISIS. They've never been a threat to the United States and aren't ever likely to be. Also, their relationship with AQ was a lot more complex and complicated than people make out ( Source). In fact, one of the reasons they allowed Bin Laden to set up shop in Afghanistan was because he was paying them, but not everyone was happy to have him there and some were ready to hand him over to the U.S. after 9/11.

Example of why giving away any of our leverage by declaring the Taliban - as a whole - a terrorist organization would be a bad idea: Source

Count on the GOP, and especially their US Senators, to do the wrong thing.

First, the Senate GOP are disgusting vermin who should be taken out in the next election. Second, to the extent that the Taliban are terrorists, of course they are. They rule by terror, violence and the threat of further violence. They are masters of dominating and limiting the narrative, which they contrive. The narrative is always false and exploitative, and must be sustained violently. But enough about JAN6. We should be discussing the Afghanis.

I'm shocked.
EDIT: Honestly, more shocked that they admitted the mistake.

SourceThis wasn't some one-off "mistake" or "error." We bombed a wedding procession in Yemen in 2014 ( Source), and there are many similar stories.

Well, I suppose nobody is claiming that hard right-wing Islam is the religion of peace.

Seems to me the "hoary reputation" as the "graveyard of empires" is in fact well deserved.
Not that it has meant the end of the empires outside of Stan. But it most certainly has meant the death of a number of empires within Stan.
Additionally, it cannot be said that the British Empire hasn't changed dramatically since its last ill fated effort in Stan. Same for the Soviet Union empire. And, as far as that goes, it's also contributed to the death of the Bush/Obama/Trump mini-empires.

SourceClassified briefing and it seems like we're only getting one side of the story so far, so maybe take cable news appearances by Congressmen with a grain of salt for now.

I'm just glad nobody had to resign over that whole Afghanistan thing. So, pretty much like the past 20 years.
