Just heard on the noon news that hundreds of people in Lahaina/Maui are still unaccounted for.
If that amuses anyone, go fuck yourself.

LOLZ .. What a numbnuts thing to say ..
pfft .. .The bomb dropped on Hiroshima isn't different or special.. just look at how many people died from bombs dropped over the last 100 years .. ..
I see. So this fire is like Hiroshima, and deaths from natural disasters in the 1950s, while significantly greater in total numbers, aren’t as important or significant as the deaths today or something. This is bizarre. It’s getting bad. Fiddler: LOOK AT THIS FIRE A LOT OF PEOPLE DIED THE WORLD IS GOING TO END!!! Me: A lot more people died in natural disasters 100 years ago than die today, and that’s with a much smaller population back then. Fiddler: HAHA THATS LIKE COMPARING HIROSHIMA (WHICH IS THE MAUI FIRE TODAY IN MY BRILLIANT METAPHOR) TO REGULAR BOMBINGS (WHICH REPRESENT THE VASTLY GREATER NUMBER OF PEOPLE WHO DIED FROM NATURAL DISASTERS ONE HUNDRED YEARS AGO)!! HAHAH GOT’EM CHECKMATE!
Like Hiroshima in that it's (at this time..like the atomic bomb at its time) unprecedented ..
‘ This really is unprecedented’ President of Hawaii Firefighters Union, Bobby Lee (But Bobby don't know shit.. does he? )
Seems if you weren't so interested in making these flippant empty suit comments you might have picked up on that ..
Plus .. the truly BIZARRE part of your hapless bumpkining is you thinking I'd allow the summing of ALL deaths from ALL natural disasters to use as part of the metric for a single incident to gauge the severity of this fire.. That's just a stupid way of looking at it.. perhaps brought on by your haste to stuff another flannel shirt and a pair of overalls with straw ..
In looking at local trends one does not include phenomena that are outside of the subject of interest .. For instance, one does not directly compare damage from fires with floods.. What you can say is that there are more or less fires within a given time frame .. or there are more or less floods .. If within a system you see more or less of both THEN you can comment on the forcing behind them .
The fact is.. you aren't prepared to have this conversation and I've never really seen anything from you that would lead me to think you actually want to be..

Indeed.. We've gotten pretty good at mitigating some natural disasters.. early warnings, resource management, transportation .. Do you realize that we pump water (11,700,000 to 12,000,000 megaliters) from Lake Mead to Arizona, California, Nevada, and Mexico .. Imagine the 'natural disasters' in the Southwest without it.

For historical context:
This isn’t the first major fire in Lahaina. A massive blaze destroyed more than 30 structures in the harbor town in 1919. Arson was the suspected cause of that fire.
This is the first major disaster since Hurricane Iniki in 1992. That hurricane devastated much of Kauai. Ten years before that, in 1982, Hurricane Iwa also laid waste to Kauai. I was too young to remember Iwa, but I was in high school when Iniki happened. I remember we had heavy winds and rain, and our power went out. On our radio, we listened to reports on what was happened on Kauai. It was scary.
Two major tsunamis hit the island of Hawaii, one in 1946 and the other in 1960. 159 people were killed statewide in the 1946 disaster. 61 people died in the 1960 tsunami. The victims in both tragedies included dozens of young schoolchildren. In one of those tsunamis, the children raced out to the low tide to pick up fish flopping on the sand, not knowing that the receding waters were a sign of the tidal wave to come.

The toll has risen, and seems likely to rise more as bodies are discovered.

This guy told me so .. .. He's the President of the Wheat Union It happens 12 times a year or sometimes as often as once a month all over the world so it's extremely precedented .. In fact I hear that wildfires will burn Lahaina again next month.
Oh yeah .. CHECKMATE ..
