I just had this today. Red hot German doctor; Covid19 protection; highest quality treatment; paid for by my taxes. Total cost to me, today, £0. Free parking.
Yesterday I was in the same hospital for a severe mental health episode, caused (originally) by Army service. Again.... no cost to me at point of delivery. Employer not involved. No paperwork. No insurers. I go in, ask for help. Help.
While waiting to be processed in A&E (ER) yesterday, a guy wheels in his grandad. Fell out of wheelchair. Head injury. Treatment provided. Forms to fill in? None.
Name, date of birth, that's it.
Why is your system so bureaucratic and expensive?

Glad to hear you're doing better now.
As to why the US system is so ass-backward... it's a mystery to me why the greatest nation on earth has the most inequitable health care system of any developed nation.
I surmise it's due in large part to a mistaken worship of profit over people.
Change comes very slowly to our system. In this case, it's a big minus.

It’s just nationalism until you’re also pushing for a Europe wide network of equitable government provided health care coming from the same resource bucket. And even then, the next push should be a global health care network where everybody gets access to the same quality of health care, or it’s just racism. Why should you get better health care than an average Ethiopian, you selfish monster?

I'm happy you've gotten the treatment you need, Limey. Stay well. But I'm curious, what percentage of your income goes to taxes?

I'm happy you've gotten the treatment you need, Limey. Stay well. But I'm curious, what percentage of your income goes to taxes? The same old fear mongering about universal health care.
Let's look at how much our current health care system costs for all who are lucky enough to have health insurance. Most analysis I've seen shows that implementing universal health care in the USA would cost the average worker and employer no more than they currently fork over for private health insurance. And, probably less, with 100% coverage of ALL, and much better overall health outcomes for EVERYBODY.
So, no added cost, better health outcomes for all. What is your problem with that?

Fear mongering? Seriously? I asked a simple question, because I really don't know. Please don't try reading anything else into my post; it's simply not there. Thank you.

The common objection to universal health care is that it will cost the average American a king's ransom in taxes. I find it hard to believe you've never heard that dodge. I was just trying to educate you about the REAL costs of universal health care, which are very likely to be LESS than our current piece-meal private health care for-profit system.
And yes, the cost argument, since it is fake, is fear-mongering. I guess you were not trying to make it, eh?

You're speaking in generalizations that prove nothing one way or the other, except that you obviously are pro-UHC. I'm asking for specific information from Limey to further understand the situation. I don't know why that bothers you so much.

Thats appx. 34% taxes overall. When I was contracting, more like 22% because small business taxes are lower. People on average wage pay appx. 22% overall; rates are higher for higher earners.

Fascinating!
Guess what?
On my last job, my employer's contribution to my health insurance premiums was 20% of my salary. Not including my share, as well as all the co-pays and co-insurance I had to pay if I wanted any actual health care or prescription medications.
My total income taxes were easily more than 22% of my salary. Perhaps as high as 34%, and higher than that if you add in all the medical costs I still had to cover but which are free for you Brits.

That's a 25 year achievable project. No. No it isn’t. Cor, blimey, where's your sense of adventure? Don't you like a challenge? All we need to do is completely transform the entire geo-economic and political system across the planet. 25 years is more than enough. I'll just finish this cup of tea, and we can get cracking.

Not free. Paid for through taxes. No charge at the point of delivery. What would the eye lasering cost you? I have had 1 of about 6 visits. Should be done by October. They like to space the sessions out.

I've had laser eye surgery also, to get rid of cataracts. We have Medicare and Humana Advantage. Cost was zero at POS. It was a slam, bam, thank you, ma'am.

Up thread i linked www.thesalarycalculator.co.uk/You can see the total tax (National Insurance is another income tax ) for a given UK salary. This is uniform across UK. There are no charges for NHS treatments, but around 50% of users pay a fixed £8 per prescription of medication and appliances.

.... would that link www.thesalarycalculator.co.uk/ .... help in these conversations? I had a quick duckduckgo on US tax rates. Looks very complex (I wish Elmer Fudd was here...) The UHC discussions often revolve around additional tax costs. Can we dig in to this a bit?
