Anybody seen the new Top Gun Maverick movie? I saw it with my 18 year old son. Loved it but it was bittersweet in many ways. The young cocky Maverick from the original film has become the old cynical and lonely Maverick of today. His only friend, Ice Man from the original, is dying of cancer. He never made rank because of his free wheeling attitude. In military parlance, he's a loser BUT, he's still a superb pilot and the navy knows it. For his sins, he's given a mission plucked right from the annals of Star Wars.
For my part, I got to get a second time at doing something in my life. In 1986, I saw the first Top Gun in a theater off of Kuhio Street in Honolulu (I was there out of Okinawa with the Air Force). This time I got to see the new version with my new son. Life is like that.
Greg says: Check it out. Use the Force Mav!

Very cool! I never saw the original so I don’t think I’ll watch the sequel. My friends who saw it say they really liked it!

Well, there's always theatrical makeup.

Here's the thing about this movie. It belongs FIRMLY in the Star Wars Universe. If you (like me) over the years rode along with Luke Skywalker as he made his run against the Death Star, maybe you wondered what that would be like in real life. Just what WOULD that be like for real? Top Gun Maverick lays it out in the (almost) real world and brother, that ain't bad, it's damn GOOD! No spoiler alerts..
This movie steals plotlines from several other movies you've already seen over the years but does it so well. George Lucas did the same thing with the original Star Wars. Off the top of my head, plot elements come from:
"The Dam Busters" 1955 "The Hunters" 1958 "633 Squadron" 1964 "Star Wars" 1977
But that's OK. 'Help me Mav... You're my only hope'....

What was old, is new again...
In 1964, nine year old Greg got to see Cliff Robertson do it. In 1977, 22 year old Greg got to see Mark Hamil do it. In 2022, 67 year old Greg and his 18 year old son got to see Tom Cruise do it. Life can be good.
