It's not up to this board to decide what the student or her school should do.
However one solution that springs to mind is to rename the school "Tyler High" and leave it at that.
I watched all of Ken Burn's epic documentary series on the Civil War. In that work, one of the historian commentators (forget his name right now) described in some detail the character of Robert E. Lee. What I got out of it was that he was basically a good man who happened to have more loyalty to his state than to his nation. I guess he also owned slaves, but perhaps not many. But... he was a traitor to America, used his military skill to cause much death and destruction. We can't re-fight the Civil War, but that doesn't mean we need to honor Confederate Generals today.

PS-The Civil War historian in the Burns documentary was Shelby Foote, whose commentaries are quite memorable if from a Southern perspective. He's quoted as saying he would fight for the Confederacy today if the issues were the same.

Would the newly named Tyler High School then only be named after our slave owning tenth POTUS? Or would it be named after some other, less racist Tyler?

Then she could play on the rowing team.

Lee was no traitor and he used his military skill to DEFEND his home. The aggressors who caused ALL of the death and destruction wore blue, not gray. And I recommend listening to and reading Shelby Foote. I'll guarantee that many of the Northern lies will be casualties when Foote is consulted. No wonder the race pimps and snowflakes now hate the Burns documentary and hate the good men who fought against a tyrannical federal government.
Objectivity is not allowed. Resistance is futile; you WILL be assimilated.
At least Odysseus seems to hint that there is room for a complex narrative concerning Lee. Evidently, this young lady in the story above has no room for such objectivity.

If she doesn’t want to wear the name, that’s up to her. She doesn’t have to run track.

So, what says the board? Personally, if you can't understand why a black girl doesn't want to wear Lee's name on her chest (and doesn't want to sing what can only be described as a hymn to him as well) I don't really know what to do with you.
Is that comparable to little Moishe not wanting to wear his "Hitler High" jersey? Or is that a stretch? My apologies for invoking Godwin's Law so early in the conversation.

Evidently, this young lady in the story above has no room for such objectivity. Of course she's not objective! But that doesn't mean that her views are invalid or not worthy of concern. I would point out that her school's alma mater is a literal hymn of praise to Lee. That's not objective either. Clearly this is an institution that reveres Lee. If lack of objectivity is error, which is the greater error? A school not treating history objectively or one teenager in that school?

It amazes me that there are still schools in 2020 who have their kids sing songs like that.
But then I remember we're talking about the public school system and my amazement dissipates.
(No disrespect to the OPer intended. There is a difference between "public school system" and "public school teachers" that gets blurred by some, but not by me.)

I don't think so at all.
There's not really that much difference.
The only difference is Lee knew right from wrong, and Hitler thought he was right.
Lee CHOSE ... fucking CHOSE ... to be wrong. I actually think he's a bit worse in that regard.

Ha! Thanks for the pass. Remember the "Mmm...Mmm...Mmm...Barack Hussein Obama" song one choir had their kids singing? I was outraged by that. If I can be outraged by that, I can certainly understand this girl's POV.

Would the newly named Tyler High School then only be named after our slave owning tenth POTUS? Yes. The town - Tyler, TX - and the school district are named for John Tyler, who was president during Texas' annexation. And he supported slavery and secession: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Tyler#Prelude_to_the_American_Civil_WarI doubt many people know the origins of the town's name, or care. I actually grew up not far from there.

Lee didn't choose wrongly; he made the right call and is loved for his integrity What he did is comparable to disobeying an unlawful order. The military invasion of legally seceded states by a tyrant like Lincoln was most definitely unlawful. And spare me the "it was all about slavery" fiction; I've dealt that garbage a mortal blow far too many times to count already.
