As news of Trump trying to shut down the United States Postal Service (USPS) and stall mail-in voting captures the headlines, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office today made public a patent application from the USPS titled ‘Secure Voting System’ that describes using blockchain technology to secure mail-in voting.
The application is reported as filed on February 7, 2020, and the invention is described as, “A voting system that can use the security of blockchain and the mail to provide a reliable voting system. A registered voter receives a computer readable code in the mail and confirms identity and confirms correct ballot information in an election. The system separates voter identification and votes to ensure vote anonymity, and stores votes on a distributed ledger in a blockchain.”
Sounds good ..

Who manages the blockchain? Is the blockchain itself visible or private? Blockchain is an amazing ledger system, but it is not infallibe. All depends on implementation. Freon

Freon The good thing about blockchains is that they don't need to be managed, they are on "auto" as it were. But they do need to be designed. And in that process we have to be certain that there aren't problematic points of hidden control or failure. So the questions you raise are valid but I think they matter more in the design than in management. Yes, it all depends on implementation. Blockchains can be either private or public. Bitcoin is public. Monero and others are private. I suspect the votes would be public but the ID of who cast them would be private and encrypted.
