really believe in an afterlife? I'll say very very few. What's even a hundred years of life "down here" compared to an eternity of bliss...? NOTHING!!! People buy lottery tickets with very little chances of winning and for some of them they do so constantly. Yet, how many of these people are willing to dedicate their lives to their faith? Very few. I'll say that deep down these people don't believe. They say they do when asked about it "just in case" but truly they don't. They are selfish, they are greedy, they are spiteful and still, if asked about it, they'll tell you that they are true Christians, the best kind.
Here is the very small gamble that there people are willing to take, they don't believe in an afterlife, they truly don't but "just in case", they are willing to do very little things, like go to church once in a while, get an absolution before they die or get a religious burial... This is NOTHING. It costs them nothing! Especially the post mortem part.
So that's what I am saying. People don't really believe. They think the priests are full of crap. Atheism is in fact the norm, and it will be when people will realize that which will slowly happen, unless humanity goes extinct before that (which is a distinct possibility).

I didn't know we had pay grades in that domain. How does that work?

It is a great relief. Freon

I don't think there's an "afterlife". Once you're gone, that's it. But apparently a lot of people do believe in it.
I think the belief has a cultural value, and if it makes people calmer about their inevitable demise, that's generally a good thing.
It's also entertaining to speculate as to which direction someone's soul will go after death. Up or Down?
