Article HereI heard the author (David French) debate Eric Metaxas prior to the Trump election. That was a turning point in my admiration for Eric Metaxas (lost completely when he published those pro-Trump kids books). Not sure how much alarm should be raised as per the article. One beef I have: Maybe it's the Canadian/U.S. divide, but most pastors I know (in Canada) are pentecostal, and less than half would be nationalistic in this way. Thoughts?

We don't work on Pentecost Monday, which is nice.

As for your friends, I think it's stupid to align your "religious beliefs" (whatever that means) with your political stance. It turns you into interchangeable collective bots.

I am surprised there are that many pentecostal pastors in Canada, but also recall reading Christianity is mightly thinly represented in Canada. Pentecostalism has an appeal in areas like that for some reason. Where I live, as far as I am concerned, the term "evangelical" has become meaningless if not pejorative because so many who identify as such are trumpies. They really do seem to believe he's the Lord's annointed for this particular time. But I also know that many who identify as such have no idea what the word really means. Even the ones who regularly attend church, and regularly is very relative. Twice a month is considered regular in many surveys. And I know a few self described evangelicals who do not attend at all, and probably a few of them think Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John are the infield for some major league baseball team.
When a political leader decides his religious beliefs should govern his stances more than the Constitution does, he is a Taliban in waiting.

Pentecostalism has an appeal in areas like that for some reason. The Pentecostal Assemblies of Canada is the second-largest evangelical denomination in Canada (just behind Southern Baptists, I believe), and also behind the Roman Catholic, Anglican, and United Churches (although at present attendance trajectories, the Anglican and United Churches will likely no longer exist in Canada by 2040). Most denominations in Canada (and across North America, I believe) are declining in participation. The PAOC is the exception, maintaining a holding pattern, buttressed by pentecostal immigrants swelling the ranks. Yup, the definition has shifted. As "religion" is increasingly recognized as a personal option and preference, regular attendance is twice a month. I go to the movie theatre "regularly"—that doesn't mean I go weekly. On the contrary, all political leaders are guided by religious beliefs. The Constitution provides limitations and guidelines. Religion provides motivation and values.
