Frank Capra directed the 1937 blockbuster hit, Lost Horizon. Based on a 1933 novel by James Hilton, it went way over-budget, largely due to Capra's insistence on as much realism as a story about a fictional locale could muster. He even filmed many snow scenes in a gigantic 1/3 acre ice/cold storage warehouse, so that the actors' breath would condense as visible vapor. The film cost as much as all the rest of the studio's other productions combined that year. It went through three different endings and many cuts, from over six hours of footage to as low as 108 minutes during WWII, when the book's pacifist message was suppressed. It finally was restored in 1980's to the original 132 minutes, but not without the need to substitute still shots to go along with the sound track for those portions that were lost over the years. Capra went through three actors before settling on Sam Jaffe to play the High Lama; the first two died before production began, the third was deemed unsuitable. The film's producer Harry Cohn also interfered, and when distributed nationwide to smaller theaters more cuts were made so that more showings per day could be scheduled. None of the remakes came close to matching the original. It stands today as a landmark work; the proliferation of locations and businesses donning the "Shangri-la" name is testament to its lasting influence. Even FDR got into the act, deflecting questions from the press about the origin of the Doolittle raid that bombed Tokyo as being from "Shangri-La".

Doesn't hold a candle to Shangri-La: Near Extinction, it has mutants. "Mankind is nearly extinct in this post-apocalyptic creature thriller. Most humans died from a deadly plague and the ice age they manufactured to eradicate it. A man named Vargas leads a group of survivors on a quest to reach Shangri-La, the last safe haven on Earth. However, they must fight through the cold, a mutant cult and a pack of deadly creatures to get there."

The lead actor of Lost Horizon, Ronald Coleman, got his start in silent films, but his career really took off with talkies, when it was discovered that he had what is said to be the best speaking voice in movie history. Coleman himself was an interesting chap. He joined the British army at young age and was wounded in the ankle in France during WWI, which left him with a limp for the rest of his life. His fondness for cigarettes is evident in Lost Horizon; he died at the relatively early age of 67 from emphysema.
