Hi everyone,
I hope you are all well, and that 2022 has been kind to you so far. I’ve been away for a short time due to me simply losing interest in political stuff. Instead, I’ve been spending my time on other interests (Phillip knows one of them).
I’ve also experienced a few major life changes. Scott and I finally got married in November of last year. Before that, I lost my job due to the pandemic. And then Scott had to take a salary cut which may or may not be restored sometime this year. For now, at least, we are living with my Mom and Dad to save up and make ends meet. I am doing a couple of at-home freelance jobs on the side.
I’m not sure if any of you are aware of this, but I recently found out that our dear friend Walkstall passed away last fall.
Anyways, I plan to post here when I can, primarily in the non-politics forums. Tra ta!

Thank you, Mercy. Yes, he passed away during my sabbatical from the forums. On Jan. 1, I went to Solar’s forum because I noticed Walks hadn’t been posting there, and he told me the news. I had no idea he was even ill.
Has Bert or Josie been here?

Welcome back, Jasmine. Do you still weigh 500lbs? Cool.
Josie I miss. Not so Bert.
What did Walks die from? Old age, covid, other? Sad no matter what. I cannot say we were in agreement about much, but he seemed like an honest enough chap.
Sorry to hear about your financial challenges. But you know what they say: "That which does not kill us makes us stronger." - Friedrich Nietzsche. Actually not really. But it's sort of inspirational.

congrats on the good news and sympathy on the bad news, but it's nice you and Scott have a place to be. A lot of people who lost jobs due to this pandemic don't. I think you'll enjoy the non politicals more than the politicals. I do, anyway.

I just got word that he's been refused access to the happy hunting ground on account of his double barrel machine gun...

Thank you for the welcome back, peeps.
Ulysses, I don’t know what Walks died of, and I didn’t ask. I know he was pretty up there in age.

Well, aren't we all? LOL.
I figure he might have been in his 80's. That's probably as far as I'll go, with any luck.
As far as the Nietzsche quote goes... what I don't quite get is how it can be that stuff that comes close to killing one can not, in some way, shorten one's life, or weaken one. Perhaps something lost in translation.
I think you and a member by the name of Vrede there might have a lot in common.

Nietzsche said that it makes us stronger, not that it makes us live longer... Strong people sometimes have a very short life... Ask Achilles.

Ah, good point. I didn't look at it from that perspective. Still I would think that weaklings tend not to live as long as the stronger. Or, a weakling that gains strength from adversity therefore may live longer than one that never is so challenged. Unfortunately Nietzsche is no longer around to clarify these points.
YMMV

Well, sometimes being a weakling can save your life. Strong people tend to be sent to the front (during wars) while weaklings remain behind. Society glorifies sacrificing one's life to save the nation. The net effect is that it leaves the people not willing to do so to perpetuate the species... War is anti-darwinian... in a way...

Oh, I'm not entirely sure any of that is true. If it were true, humans would not be getting a little bit larger (and presumably, stronger) with each generation. And if I'm not mistaken, the littler, weaker ones would be sent to the front lines as "cannon fodder".
YMMV

Sending the weaklings to the front... it seems like a good way to lose a war.

Nah, the weaklings would be more like guinea pigs... experimental targets to see what the enemy has got in terms of fire power. I don't know, I'm not a military kind of guy. Although I did go through a period where I consumed as much as I could about WW2 and the whole Holocaust atrocity. For better or worse, we haven't had another world war of its scope and magnitude. Yet.
