This has been the irony from day one.
But it makes sense, in a way.
For me, the American dream is growing up middle class, going to college, landing a sweet career, making a ton of cash, raising a family with the freedom to live in a safe environment surrounded by others with similar goals and attitudes.
But for Trump supporters, I'll bet what they see in Trump is their own American dream. To be an uneducated, un-curious, racist bigot, who is still capable of becoming rich and powerful, who spits in the eye of all those who became successful through intellectual pursuits. He is above them, and they know it, but he makes them believe that each of them could be him too.
