OK, you just gotta love these physicists. Seems like no matter what they cannot find, they tout it as a sure sign that they've found something even better than what they were looking for. LOL.
And who knows? Maybe they'll discover the ultimate secret of... nothing...

I would say Prof Mark Thomson, if he considers this stuff pretty exciting, lacks the personality to be an economist.

When you're trying to fill in the blanks on a major complex theory (or "set of theories") a "missing particle" can be a big deal, "pretty exciting" as much because of the new questions it raises as the expectations it does not fulfill.

In order to write these articles understandable by the layman, they have to simplify the theories. Sometimes the simplification is so drastic that fundamental elements are left out.

a subatomic particle known as the "sterile neutrino" doesn't sound like a very promising smoking gun with regard to the creation of the universe. I still gotta invoke a magical, ineffable, inexplicable, eternal (no beginning, no end) creator, one who also created time along with stuff and space to 'splain it. Seems more believable than magical, ineffable, inexplicable, eternal (no beginning, no end) stuff of some sort, including sterile neutrinos and particles of space dust that coalesced into that infinitely dense thing that burst open (big bang) and began expanding into something that is not space because space was created at that time too, along with time.
In that case you have magic without a magician.

As a continuing student of science (one never stops learning), I generally reject supernatural arguments in favor of what can be described and authenticated as thoroughly as possible.

Of course. But that is no reason to resort to airy-fairy explanations for why things are the way they are.

100% agree. And I have not done that.

The imbeciles who keep saying "god" or "creator" each time they are told anything in relation to the origins of the universe like broken records or parrots on amphetamines are not just annoying they are also idiotically ignoring how much unlikelier is a ready-made magically-perfect being than an impersonal clockwork-like universe. They don't realize the naiveté of what their addled minds mistake for subtlety and savviness. They don't realize how much their predictable clichéed objections have no more relevance in any debate of that sort than white noise.
