www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2020/07/14/alabama-veteran-marijuana-prison/Looks like a terrible miscarriage of justice. Is there more to it? Was this guy actually doing crimes that warranted 5 years? Those of us outside the US have a vague awareness of Alabama through cinema, novels, reporting, music as a backwards, racist, proudly stupid place. If this Worsley story is accurate, maybe those aren⁷'t lazy stereotypes but accurate reporting.

Just because you bought it legal doesn't mean you can have it. Is five years a little harsh? Yeah, probably. But he'll probably do a year or less.

I know this is foreign to you, but states are just that, states. They have the power to establish and enforce laws. Those laws are created, enacted and enforced by local elected officials. That means the US doesn't have one uniform law. We have 50 sets of laws in addition to federal laws. Most are pretty common, but marijuana laws are not uniform. If you travel from one state to another, you better know what is and isn't legal. Personally, I think the penalty is a little high (punny?) But the law is the law.

That's the general impression of Alabama in the rest of the USA. At least the civilized parts.

I live in Tennessee and we even consider Alabama to be full of stupid hicks. That's how low on the bar Alabama really goes.

I'm not real happy with the legalization of marijuana but it's legal in some states and illegal in others. Seriously, if you're traveling with it, it needs to be in a suitcase and not available to you if/when you are the driver of the car. Makes your life somewhat easier, actually a lot easier in some cases.
However, let this man out of jail/prison. What is his past history of arrests/convictions? Does he have one? Why is his wife given the same sentence that he's given? Past history of arrests/convictions? Something about this case smells, and it's not the odor of marijuana.

yes, some of the laws in the states are like this...its a fine line, states being allowed to make their own rules, and the convenience of national federal laws...the concept is the states can write laws, but they cannot violate the federal constitutional laws... I know in the current political climate, and this article is pure political spin...ridiculous actually...the radical left tries to make everything trumps fault or a conservative states, when really this is a state issue... other examples... there are countless cases of people legally allowed to own/carry a gun in one state, who wile traveling thru another draconian state get arrested and sent to prison...there are now protecting passage thru a state with a gun vs staying or stopping for some time in a state...but that was not always the case...here are a couple examples of only new jersey... www.foxnews.com/politics/traveling-mans-gun-arrest-appealed-to-supreme-courtabcnews.go.com/US/jersey-man-imprisoned-gun-charge-appeals-governor-clemency/story?id=12287484or another example...here in maine I can open carry, concealed carry with no permit..we are the safest state in the country, or the top 3 depending on the year...but if I travel a state or two down to massachusetts, if I were staying over, and had the same handgun, not registered in mass, and was pulled over for speeding say and they found it, automatic 10 year jail sentence, no parole etc....

You asked my opinion. My opinion is that the law stands until it is changed. i.e "the laws is the law."

Didn't ask about the law. "the laws is the law."
In the 30s and 40s Germans turned in their Jewish neighbors .. KSU says "the laws is the law." ..

So narcotics laws are like Nazi Germany? Please explain the leap of logic that gets you to that conclusion.

So narcotics laws are like Nazi Germany? Please explain the leap of logic that gets you to that conclusion. It's a question of right and wrong. At the risk of sounding like a partisan person, I'd contend that such questions are more difficult for Conservatives, who seem to prefer rules; hence the Nuremburg defence. In the case in question, the man imprisoned for 5 years has not harmed a soul; his posession of a substance is entirely legal only a few hours drive in any direction. A quirk in legislation has robbed him, via the arresting officer's use of words, of his future. This isn't justice, it's administrative absurdity.

Ol Archie's been hitting the Schlitz too hard, he seems unable to write coherently or use basic english.
