I thought the Breeze forum would be an ideal place for a new kind of thread: debates over silly topics that are neither based on politics, nor pop culture entertainment. For the most part, these will be questions that have been floating around in one corner of the internet or another.
This is a kind of game, more than a serious debate, so I just ask that we stick to the following three rules:
1. Please vote in the poll at some point if you're going to join in the discussion.
2. It is perfectly Ok to change your mind, even to change it more than once, but it goes against the spirit of the game to sit back and claim the moral high ground by claiming all points of view are valid. Of course they are, as these aren't serious discussions. The point is to pick a side and have fun defending it!
3. Politics really don't have a place in these discussions.
And now, on to SNPNPCD #1! .

A straw has but one hole.
If the straw was 1 mm long you'd confidently say that the 'straw' had but one hole.. like a doughnut. A straw a mile long would be no different.
But one could also contend that there is a minimum limit to what can be considered a 'straw'. When it stops being able to fulfill its function ... the ability to facilitate the transfer of liquid to the mouth ... is it a straw?
Thinking about it.. there's also a maximum limit to 'straws'.. Theoretically ~30 feet.. based on standard barometric pressure.. In practice about 23 feet.

I was originally on team "two holes," but I think I'm switching sides. My original thought was that it would make sense to say something like "plug up one hole in the straw and leave the other clear." But the more I think of it, the more I think "plug up one end of the straw and leave the other clear" makes more sense. So, a straw has two ends, but one hole. |

So, I am guessing, the number of holes is dependent on how many sphincters are open at the moment and if all six of them were open at the same time which I guess shouldn't happen, although that could explain some nasty cases of halitosis... then that would make it one hole. |
