I don't consider divisive to necessarily be a bad thing by default [Presidents like Jefferson, Lincoln, FDR, and Obama were known to be "divisive." Trump has been divisive for pretty much all the wrong reasons [Especially when it comes to coddling dictators while pissing off our democratic allies].

I always figure, with any POTUS or even Candidate, that if they pixx off the opposition, they're doing a good job, at least according to their own party.

The same news organization that faked military records of a Republican President thinks the current Republican President is the worst? Color me shocked. I may just die.

Lincoln, in all fairness, did start/preside over a civil war...soooooooo....he's probably the most divisive. Obama tried to start a race war, so he's a close second. But honestly, what is divisive about Trump? That he doesn't roll over and take the liberal media beatings like a good boy?

Lincoln was the most divisive, ranks in the top five as the most authoritarian and was easily the most murderous of the lot.
If Obama's legacy was kicking off a race war, it's beginning to look like he was successful.

Perhaps the most idiotic sitcom of the 60's.
I used to watch it just to see Eva Gabor.
So sue me.

This a great article that perfectly illustrates the overwhelming bias that clouds the perceptions of these so called political scientists.
Obvious number 1 should have been Lincoln. He presided over a civil war for shit sakes.
Then it should have looked at times when there was other mass unrest against the actions of Presidents. Of course the times just prior and the civil war.
WWI, Vietnam war, civil rights movement, etc. The Presidents during those times clearly were more divisive than any President we've had recently.

No. No. No, and No. Lincoln led the fight to preserve a Union which he found divided. Other Presidents fought wars, rightfully less than wrongfully perhaps, but they too often used those wars to paper over other issues and unite our citizenry behind the war effort, not to divide it over a cause. Just for my edification, though, could you please explain what you meant by including the civil rights movement in your list, and could you also identify which President used the civil rights movement to divide the country?

Just for my edification, though, could you please explain what you meant by including the civil rights movement in your list, and could you also identify which President used the civil rights movement to divide the country? Perfect example of letting your bias cloud your reasoning. Whether the actions are justified or not, whether or not there was intent to divide or unify, is irrelevant. A historical look at if those actions caused division is what needs to be analyzed. Lincoln led a fight that killed hundreds of thousands. His armies burned and pillaged the south. He instituted a highly unpopular draft. He emancipated the slaves. Declared martial law. Suspended habeas corpus. Restricted freedom of speech. Wrong or right, justified or not, doesn't matter. Those actions were the most divisive by any president we've ever had. I included the civil rights movement, specifically I was thinking during the 60's, when the President and federal government started getting more heavily involved, because the actions of the Presidents at the time in regards to it often caused mass unrest.
