Just put on the first Dave Grisman Quintet CD in my collection. I've heard his band perform more than once in this area - they are originally from Marin County. It's some of the best instrumental "new bluegrass" music ever.

(Grisman calls it "Dawg Music" or "Dawg Jazz". Whatever he calls it, it's wonderful.)

That is so good. It reminds me of Reinhardt and Grappelli, and that is never a bad thing.

The violinist on this album is Darryl Anger. Dave Grisman plays lead mandolin. The guitarist, Tony Rice, is also excellent.
Here's a recording of a live performance of the Quintet at Great American Music Hall in San Francisco, in 1977. I have heard the Grisman band play live. Could have been in Berkeley or Marin County, so long ago I forget now, although I think it was at a later date than this one.

I made it through 37+ minutes. Those guys were undeniably great. But at some point, it needs to get funkier.

Had the local PBS station on. They were playing a repeat of an all Frank Sinatra show.
I cannot truly say I am a Sinatra fan. Too much attitude.
He tends to speak the lyrics rather than sing them.
But some people are crazy about him.

Sinatra was the Male Voice of the 20thC. That was just on radio, but then movies and TV and all those women and awards and Vegas and the Rat Pack, while still all the time making with that music . . . Of course there was an attitude. He thought he was in the mob, for crissake. He had an attitude. But the voice and the music? You really don't dig Sinatra?

No, I don't dig Sinatra. Maybe his early stuff (in the 50's) was OK. But later his singing was more like stage acting. If you've studied music, look up "Sprechstimme" . . . that is essentially what Sinatra did for the last 20 years of his life.

Yes, I understand. But not everyone becomes insignificant after the first act. And not everybody dies at 27. So, Sinatra had longevity and what comes with it. Good and bad. YMMVPBT.

I understand he had close ties with the mafia... Especially the Arlen-Mercer Mob. He's got you by the time he lights the match. The rest is splendidly easy brilliance.
