Not sure, but they probably already knew that. What they discovered was that the fallout from the nuclear tests contained enough radiation to contaminate the cardboard used to package the films, and that this radiation fogged the films. It was an indirect confirmation of the nuclear testing, although as I recall, initially it was top secret and the Alamogordo explosion was falsely attributed to a munitions storage facility explosion. After Hiroshima/Nagasaki, they no longer could conceal the testing. But it continued in the atmosphere for a decade or so, until there was an international treaty mandating underground testing instead.
Probably some physicists, if they knew of the film fogging, figured out the real cause before it became public knowledge.

I'm not sure I'd ever want to visit the site of the test of the first atomic bomb: Trinity.
The fascinating thing about the linked video is that the radioactivity was detected by photographic film hundreds of miles away, in Indiana, where it got into the Wabash River water used to manufacture cardboard used to cushion photographic films/plates.
And if one were to watch the rest of the linked video... well, for most of us, that means you'll know that you have strontium-90 in your bones and teeth.
