Dear Imaginary God: I don’t believe in you, but just in case you really do exist, I want to thank you for your miraculous gift of the coronavirus. This is the best thing to happen to this world since Sept. 11. I pray that this virus gets worse and worse, and that our economy will be devastated so that Trump will lose in November. Russian collusion and Ukraine didn’t work, but hopefully this will do the trick! So please keep up the good work. Let the virus shut down our country so that everyone will be forced to rely on government for everything. Also, please help me to avoid looking foolish when I pretend to care about the number of deaths caused by the virus. (I’m not used to acting all pro-life, amirite?) Anyways, thanks again for this wonderful disease. Amen!

Frankly, if Trump had any political experience or know-how, he would have been able to turn his response to a crisis into a political opportunity. That sounds crass, but our system is based on the idea that making good decisions reaps political benefits. Obviously, the decisions made during a crisis offer the chance for greater political benefits (or detriments). Whatever one feels about the policy decisions he has made, Trump's political response has been one giant dumpster fire of a disaster. The Democrats are going to pounce on that. Politics is big-boy stuff. Taking advantage of Trump's failures is not the same thing as wishing (or praying) that disaster befalls the country. |

I said "based on," not "currently functions on." The Founding Fathers planned for a mostly educated, reasonable electorate that, on the average, wouldn't vote against their long-term benefits, while understanding that it might not work out that way, in which case their experiment might fail. Still, my point is that it isn't crass to say a skilled politician should be able to respond well to (not manufacture) a crisis in order to benefit his political fortunes. But yes, it is also possible for a politician to respond poorly to a crisis by only concerning himself with what would most easily benefit his immediate political fortunes. It would be crass to say a politician should do that. In this case of this situation, I would argue that Trump has done neither. He has mostly floundered blindly from one rambling talking point to another with no coherent strategy or message, helping neither the actual long term benefits to the country, the perceived short term benefits to the country or his own political fortunes. |

Basically, Jasman made a bet a week or so ago. He set the terms of the bet. If I lost, then I'd be on a time-out for a week. If he lost, then he'd be on a timeout for six months. Jasman lost the bet, but has refused to do the honorable thing and stop posting on LNF for six months.
