Darwin didn't discover everything about evolution... there were bound to be a few things that he'd be unable to explain.

No doubt Mercy for all is a genius when it comes to evolution. Well, now, look what you did! Now you have 10,007 posts...
It's so nice that you are paying attention to somebody else's post count.
Does that excite you?
Should I be charging you for the experience?
Nah, I don't give a shit.

You take this all pretty seriously, don't you? MFA, not that I am complaining, but I am curious. Why are you so vehemently defending the theory of natural selection? I mean, doesn't it undermine your idea of a supreme being calling the shots? In fact, it's kinda funny that useless would be on the side of magic and you on the one of reason. Although, I don't know him well, besides our little antagonism, I hardly ever read what he writes and I already know that Oompa loompa is deist or theist or whatever... So maybe it's not so surprising after all, still if there's one subject on which I didn't think he's be antagonizing you, it's this one.

How does natural selection undermine the idea of a supreme being calling the shots? There are mechanisms by which it rains which don't require God to magically form droplets of water in the air and throw them down to the earth...

It might be because "very suddenly" is still a pretty good length of time, geologically speaking? Also I think we underestimate the speed at which speciation happens. We shouldn't fool ourselves into thinking we've uncovered even the tiniest fraction of that which has lived here before. What really was, would be incomprehensible. What Darwin was describing was his ignorance. Because he was a scientist.

Here's a crude analogy. The matter of the universe is like the hardware of a computer. God is less concerned with the hardware than the software.

Here's a crude analogy. The matter of the universe is like the hardware of a computer. God is less concerned with the hardware than the software. Not quite. The software doesn't have a life if its own, it needs the hardware to exists. You people think that the software can exist all by itself. Everything is proof positive that when the hardware (our bodies, our brains) deteriorates, the software (our minds) decays right along with it. I've seen someone lose their mind over a period of almost twenty years, one minuscule piece at a time, at one time you have a wholesome person in full possession of her mental capabilities, twenty years later there is almost nothing left of that person, not even her identity. She doesn't even know who she is anymore. But in between, twenty years of very slow decline and no way of telling at what point you've lost the person. This should show to even the most stubborn ones that the mind can't exist separately from the body. It should but it doesn't, because the most stubborn ones are not that way because of anything related to reason. They're frightened fools that will never know that it's safe outside, because they'll never even try.

Not only is "you people" unhelpful (uhhh...always?), but no, I don't think what you what you are suggesting. Just as software requires a computer to run, so a human being requires matter to exist. I have no idea how you could understand my crude illustration to suggest the opposite. 🧐 And yet people with significant injuries to the brain have had other parts of the brain "take over" their function. How does that happen?

This is supposed to be about Science and Technology. I believe there is a Religion section where your thoughts would be more appropriate.

True. The tangent started in Reply #24 to which "my thoughts" were a response. I did not volunteer them unilaterally. If the thread could be split and moved, that would be great, but I have no ability to make that happen.

I just created a thread topic over on Religion, titled "Science vs. Religion".
It was easy.

Completely irrelevant. Where did I say anything to suggest otherwise? It's as if you had responded: Still, you can't deny that Kobe beef is more fattening than cornish game hen... Seriously?

Well, thanks. Did you copy over the existing questions and responses? Did you "split and move" the thread?

I said no such thing. It's as if you had responded: Oh, so you're the only Christian that eats Kobe beef instead of cornish game hen... Completely irrelevant. Where did I say anything to suggest otherwise? You are introducing the mind/body problem aren't you? What is the person--the mind or the brain? Surely you see the relevance? Or am I jumping ahead too quickly?

...You are introducing the mind/body problem aren't you? What is the person--the mind or the brain? Surely you see the relevance? Or am I jumping ahead too quickly? What you seem to say (I say "seem" because evidently with you, one never knows) is that the mind can't exist without the body but in your very next statement you seem to say that the mind can exist without the body... in eternal life... IOW, make up your fucking mind!!! I mean surely you can see how your gibberish could be (for a normal person that is) a little... CONFUSING!!!!
