Seems like a sign of the strength of Islamism in Turkey. SourceErdogan says first prayers in Hagia Sophia on July 24For context, the basilica was converted to a mosque in 1453, after the Ottomans conquered Constantinople. It was converted to a museum by Ataturk and his secularists. In the 1990s, another Islamist party (Erbakan and the Refah Party) proposed reconsecrating the basilica as a mosque ( Source). |

I thought it was still a mosque. Didn't know it had been converted to a museum. One of my favourite buildings. Absolutely stunning in person, I'm sure. |

It was originally an Orthodox church, when Istanbul was Constantinople and considered impregnable.

It certainly is. The downside of democracy (or democratic means) is that power is given to the people. Look at Iraq and/or Afghanistan. As soon as they are "democratic", they vote for theology. The more important part of a functioning democratic state would be its constitutional (or codified) framework, otherwise there're no brakes for when the will of the people to drive off the cliff happens. And it does, lol. |

It certainly is. The downside of democracy (or democratic means) is that power is given to the people. On the other hand:

Nor is that kind of behavior unusual in Turkey (nor are coups).
