Senate Republicans selected Sen. John Thune of South Dakota to be their leader in the next Congress, three sources with knowledge of the vote said, replacing longtime leader Mitch McConnell, who is stepping down after a record 18 years.
Thune, the Senate Republican whip, ran against two other senators: John Cornyn of Texas, a former whip, and Rick Scott of Florida, an underdog candidate who just won a second term.

YUUUUGE setback.
Speaking as a South Dakotan the only thing that's almost as bad is Kristi Noem being put anywhere in the Trump admin.
Seems the Senate still hasn't heard the People banging on their doors. Queshank

I know how you feel, .. AND I have little use for Cornyn as well, but, .. I would NOT worry too much because the RINO Thune KNOWS he better stay in line as Trump WON a huge mandate, .. so, he better keep his Republican ass in line, or he will never hear the end of it from Trump and others!

This would not surprise me.
As a longtime observer involved in SD politics ... altho not since Daschel and Herseth ...
John Thune and Kristi Noem are our "empty headed plastic Ken and Barbie politicians."
John Thune isn't a leader. He's an empty cup waiting to be filled.
Truth be told, I'd rather have "South Dakota values" exported nationwide than California values. (There's a reason every one of my interview steps in California pointed to my Midwestern hardworking culture as their reason for selecting me for the job.)
But I've spent decades fighting the Thunes and the Noems. It don't set well that those two are the examples of SD "values" being exported.
