They have a mutual defense pact "that commits the two countries to providing military assistance to each other, if either of them is invaded." Well, Russia was invaded.
And as thor noted, there have been several reports that some of these troops are deserting.
But if they're not deserting, they're dying, and either way, that's one less North Korean that we and South Korea have to worry about.
