This was an interesting story from yesterday, and given the contentiousness of the holiday, seems appropriate for the politics board:
Some Italians right now:

Will the left hate Columbus more or less now
Then we had to remove his statue because he was a white european puritanical racist killer
If he is a Jew - now let’s see the hate fly.

Is a mass murderer Jew or Gentile? Doesn't matter.

Doesn't change his story to me at all. Freon Maybe not for you, but there's a reason I included the Sopranos reference.

Not my kind of flick. Care to enlighten me on the reference? My opinion comes from the Jewish perspective. Freon

There's an episode (Season 4, episode 3) about Columbus Day and a protest against Columbus. The discussion outside the butcher's (and later) is about how Columbus is a hero for Italian immigrants. Can read more about that here (particularly the 8th and 9th paragraphs).
So, if he's not Italian, then that impacts their story/heritage somewhat as it is a point of pride for their descendants.

The history of the Jews in Italy spans more than two thousand years to the present. The Jewish presence in Italy dates to the pre-Christian Roman period and has continued, despite periods of extreme persecution and expulsions, until the present. As of 2019, the estimated core Jewish population in Italy numbers around 45,000 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_Jews_in_Italy

Some questions raised about his research though.

He was born in Italy, so that makes him Italian. However, he led four transatlantic maritime expeditions in the name of the Catholic Monarchs of Spain to the Caribbean and to Central and South America.

"While Lorente acknowledged that he had not been able to pinpoint Columbus’s place of birth, he said the likelihood was that he had come from the Spanish Mediterranean region."
However, his findings have not been peer reviewed and the DNA results have not been shared with anyone else apparently.

How did he get certified DNA from Columbus? It seems absurdly dicey...

I have a hard time believing that all the DNA wouldn't decompose after so long a time. These are very complex and quite fragile molecules.

All historical accounts I have read says he was born in Italy. DNA does not determine where you were born

Easy way to find out if the barbarian Columbus was Jewish or not: Check the margins of his charts for #s of Chinese restaurants.
