For their kids incarceration? I read a few articles on this with different perspectives. What do people here think? When kids go to lock-up, typically their families are already very broken. More likely than not the parents (or parent) either can't afford to pay (then what?) or they will harm the kid, kick them out onto the street, etc. For KIDS, it really needs to be about fixing them, assuming they aren't in for murder or something. The more punitive the system, the more likely they will not escape the cycle. Lock-up for kids just puts them in with people who reinforce their bad issues. You are creating a bigger problem when they become adults. Locking up a kid may be necessary, but stacking a big monetary penalty on the parents for the lock-up will just make it hopeless. The majority will never escape the cycle if you make it that much harder.
