In 136 bc, and again in 104 bc, two of the largest slave revolts of antiquity broke out in Sicily – so we are accustomed to think. On each occasion thousands of individuals seized the opportunity to claim their freedom and violently resisted the Roman authority’s attempts to stop them.
And they won. And they did all the farming. Sicily was not part of Italy then. And Italy saw that there was no bread on the table. So they did not go to war with the slaves. They made Sicily part of Italy. And they paid the slaves to do the farming. And there was peace then.
Are we going to have 20 million new citizens pretty soon?
